- Description:
- 57, 38, 2, and A recording of Samvera's Virtual Connect conference in 2017. Follow th 'Related URL' below. Samvera Virtual Connect (SVC), formerly known as Hydra Virtual Connect, is an opportunity for Samvera Community participants to gather online to touch base on the progress of community efforts at a roughly halfway point between face-to-face Samvera Connect meetings. Samvera is a growing, active community with many initiatives taking place across interest groups, working groups, local and collaborative development projects, and other efforts, and it can be difficult for community members to keep up with all of this activity on a regular basis. SVC will give the Samvera community a chance to come together to catch up on developments, make new connections, and re-energize itself towards Samvera Connect 2017 in Evanston in November. Duration

- Following the change of name from the Hydra Project to Samvera, the Steering Group commissioned a set of logo designs for the community. Of those submitted, the tree, in autumn colors, was the clear favorite. This logo went into use mid-2017. - A recording of Hydra Virtual Connect 2016. Follow th 'Related URL' below. Hydra Virtual Connect (HVC) is an opportunity for Hydra Project participants to gather online to touch base on the progress of community efforts at a roughly halfway point between face-to-face Hydra Connect meetings. Hydra is a growing, active community with many initiatives taking place across interest groups, working groups, local and collaborative development projects, and other efforts, and it can be difficult for community members to keep up with all of this activity on a regular basis. HVC will give the Hydra community a chance to come together to catch up on developments, make new connections, and re-energize itself towards Hydra Connect 2016 in Boston in October. Duration, 44, 42, and 2

- A presentation given at Connect 2017 described thus and Presentation on a gem for Hyrax models and authorities, which provides a central place for creating models for different types of works. Each new model draws on a central pot of properties to declare the set of properties needed to fully describe the particular work. The gem already exists and has sample models for journal article, thesis and more. In this presentation we will work through the process of defining a new model and then using that model in a Hyrax application. The idea behind the gem is to make it easier for developers to deploy new models, and provide a place for metadata folks to jointly define re-usable models.

- A presentation given at Connect 2017 described thus and In this presentation, we present Fedora 4’s performance in different use cases. These use cases are the most general use cases that were developed by the Fedora 4 performance team. We compare the performance between different versions of Fedora 4 and demonstrate the improvement between these versions. We will also describe the procedures of these performance experiments and demonstrate the software we use (Ansible, AWS, and JMeter). Our performance experiments are conducted in the AWS ecosystem, and we use an R graph tool to visualize the JMeter result. With the AWS grant, we can do many different performance experiments in many scales. Moreover, it is easy to repeat and verify the performance results using AWS. The Fedora 4 performance team wants to know more about the Samvera community’s interests related to the Fedora 4 performance. We plan to gather more use cases from the Samvera community, including middleware such as Solr, Camel, and Fuseki, etc. We can investigate, explore issues, and continue enhancing the future of Fedora 4.

- Fulcrum is in its third year of developing a publishing platform on Samvera (and is now running on Hyrax). Given the recent interest in possible successor solutions to Digital Commons / bepress, I think this could take the form of a workshop with 3 parts, 1. Presentation of the service model that Fulcrum is being built to support, 2. Presentation of the features and architecture of the platform, with an emphasis on Epub support and publishing workflows, A workshop given at Samvera Connect 2017 described thus, and 3. A group discussion of the kinds of publishing-related service requests attendees are hearing from their communities who are concerned about the Elsevier acquisition of Digital Commons / bepress, and what interest is there in a coordinated community effort around support for publishing and fully-encoded texts.

- Using Git and GitHub for managing metadata (no new data models, we promise)This session is proposed as a two-part workshop, A workshop given at Samvera Connect 2017 described thus, and The first will cover a modified version of the ‘Version Control with Git’ Software Carpentry lesson, tailored for a non-developer audience, with more focus on metadata. This is typically taught as a half-day (3 hour) workshop. The second part will focus on the use of Git and GitHub in the context of the metadata workflow. We will present examples and strategies, taken from recent work by UC Santa Barbara and UC San Diego, of version control, pull requests, and automated hooks and integrations as they relate to moving metadata through a workflow and into our repositories. In addition to these demonstrations, we hope to spend a good percentage of the time available in discussion with other interested institutions and how we might leverage our collective experience to make getting our metadata into our repositories easier, more consistent, and maybe even more fun!

- Description:
- A presentation given at Connect 2017 described thus, it’s not fun to have an ingest fail overnight and spend the morning tracking down why. Programmatically testing and validating digital object metadata prior to ingest helps us avoid these failures. The metadata itself is managed by Git and stored in GitHub, Several years ago UCSB incorporated Git/GitHub and JIRA into our metadata management and batch ingest workflows. Since then we’ve looked at repurposing other development tools to provide lightweight and automated solutions to problems we often face. One is that we rely primarily on batch ingests when adding content to our Samvera repository. As a result it’s especially important for the metadata to be error-free, and this allows us to run automated checks against any changes using Jenkins and some custom libraries we’ve written for validating CSV and MODS metadata. In this session, we will provide an overall of our current ingest preparation workflow and the tools we are using, and will discuss some of the benefits that have come out of this collaborative effort.

- Description:
- The Royal Library was very fast to adapt the emerging web technologies in the mid 1990’s. The web was used as an integrated part of digitization projects, resulting in a number of specially tailored web sites for various types of content, manuscripts, images, literary texts, journal articles, etc. Each project and type of material would typically result in its own data model, metadata format, workflow, and a database/repository that was tightly coupled with the web application. In later years, as the throughput on the digitization production lines has increased, more automated ways of dissemination have been developed. However this has not been able to fundamentally replace the tendency to building silos around different types of content. Being both national and university library, we can expect that in the future accessioned material will largely be born digital. In order to handle this situation, we have decided to start implementing an integrated digital library infrastructure, covering all aspects of digital collection building and management. The assumptions are that some metadata will be shared between all types of digital materials, and that the main steps in a digital object life-cycle will be common for all object types. In my presentation I am going to show how we are building a technical infrastructure in support of this, using building blocks such as Hydra, Fedora Commons, Solr, and Blacklight. I will also be touching on the organizational side of the project, focusing on the challenges to both IT people and collections staff in this process of change., and A presentation to the EOD Conference held at the National Library of Technology, Prague, Czech Republic, 17-18 October 2013. - Fedora is the flexible, extensible, open source repository platform that commonly underlies Samvera implementations. Fedora provides a number of core services that Samvera already uses, such as CRUD operations, versioning, and fixity, and several new, potentially useful extended services have been introduced within the last year. The API Extension Framework provides a means of binding services to repository objects in order to extend the functionality of Fedora, while the Import/Export Utility makes it easier to get content into and out of Fedora in standardized formats and packages. This workshop will introduce both of these new services and discuss how they might be used in the context of Samvera. Participants will also have an opportunity to try them out via hands-on exercises in combination with a virtual machine. and A workshop given at Samvera Connect 2017 described thus

- Description:
- A presentation given at the Open Repositories conference in 2010. In part, the proposal reads and While repositories provide obvious benefits in hosting and managing content, it is equally clear that there is no “one size fits all” solution to the range of digital asset management needs at a typical institution, much less across institutions. A system that supports the submission, approval and dissemination of electronic theses and dissertations, for example, has demonstrably different requirements than a digitization workflow solution, an e-science data repository, or media preservation and access system. There is a clear need in the repository community to readily develop and deploy content-, domain-, and institution-specific solutions that integrate the flexibility and richness of customized applications and workflows with the underlying power of repositories for content management, access and preservation. This paper will provide an overview of Hydra’s philosophy, architecture, and components, as well as demonstrations of various Hydra installations. The paper will also provide a progress report on Hydra development to date and its overall roadmap, as well as provide observations on the successes and challenges of community-based development of shared repository solutions.

- Description:
- Building and using an open source community-supported system to manage audiovisual materials for a digital archive/library has many advantages and challenges. Being able to dictate the features, have a system speak to specific needs, and have staff on hand that can change or fix problems is certainly appealing. Embarking on this effort with an established open community, such as Samvera, has the advantages of a robust community of developers and service vendors to turn to for help. Managing needed customisations to core code base, keeping track of updates and contributing to the community, however, is challenging. For WGBH, a public television station with a robust 60-year archive, most customisations are due to the use PBCore to structure the metadata of the audio-visual items. This paper focuses on WGBH’s efforts to build a system for its Media Library and Archives based on the Samvera digital repository framework and its Hyrax and Avalon Media System ‘products’. and Abstract

- A recording of Samvera's Virtual Connect conference in 2018. Follow the 'Related URL' link below. Samvera Virtual Connect (SVC), is an opportunity for Samvera Community participants to gather online to touch base on the progress of community efforts at a roughly halfway point between face-to-face Samvera Connect meetings. Samvera is a growing, active community with many initiatives taking place across interest groups, working groups, local and collaborative development projects, and other efforts, and it can be difficult for community members to keep up with all of this activity on a regular basis. SVC will give the Samvera community a chance to come together to catch up on developments, make new connections, and re-energize itself towards Samvera Connect 2018 in Salt Lake City in October.
