Samvera Virtual Connect 2019
User Collection- Description:
- Samvera Virtual Connect (SVC), is an opportunity for Samvera Community participants to gather online to touch base on the progress of community efforts at a roughly halfway point between face-to-face Samvera Connect meetings. Samvera is a growing, active community with many initiatives taking place across interest groups, working groups, local and collaborative development projects, and other efforts, and it can be difficult for community members to keep up with all of this activity on a regular basis. SVC will give the Samvera community a chance to come together to catch up on developments, make new connections, and re-energize itself towards Samvera Connect 2019.

- A lightning talk at Samvera Virtual Connect 2019 described thus and This talk will discuss NewspaperWorks, a gem that provides content models, batch ingest tasks, and front-end functionality for digitized newspaper content. The gem is intended to be installed in a Hyrax-based repository application, and can be used to add newspaper content to an existing repository, or create a stand-alone newspaper content interface.

- Description:
- A lightning talk at Samvera Virtual Connect 2019 described thus and The Timeliner is a pedagogical tool that was available in the old Variations application, the Avalon predecessor. It allows for a visual representation of the structure of an audio file or fragment. The tool, which will be made available as a standalone, has been reimplemented using IIIF Presentation API v3 for the presentation layer and the IIIF Auth protocol for the integration with Avalon. We will show the tool and also discuss the technical aspects of the IIIF standards.

- Description:
- Northwestern University Libraries is currently running Samvera applications in production. Three of these are developed, maintained, and managed by the Repository & Digital Curation workgroup, * Arch, an Institutional Repository, based on Hyrax 2.4.1 * AVR, Northwestern's audiovisual repository, based on Avalon 6.3 * DONUT, the staff-facing ingest interface for the digital object repository, based on Hyrax 2.4.1 In developing and deploying these applications, we have encountered (and mostly overcome) numerous stumbling blocks relating to performance, scalability, customization, and assumptions about the deployment environment and infrastructure on which the apps will run. While we have found it possible to shoehorn the Samvera stack (as it exists today) into our Amazon Web Services cloud-based deployment environment, we have also started to investigate the rewards and compromises involved in taking a cloud-first approach to our next generation of tools. We have identified several basic tenets for this approach so far, * If AWS offers a native Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solution for a particular problem, use it (e.g., choose ElasticSearch/Cloud Search over Solr) * Avoid virtual server instances that run 24x7 waiting for requests/work * Do not assume there is a local filesystem to work with * Optimize startup time so that units of work can be spawned and killed as needed * Constantly assess and reassess every unit of work for scalability, repeatability, and idempotence * Keep data portable and code adaptable, but don't over-stress about vendor lock-in In this presentation, members of the Repository Development & Administration Team will present on lessons learned from 7 years of working with Samvera, Avalon, and Hyrax, what the future holds for our next round of in-house development, and the opportunities & compromises our cloud-first approach creates regarding our use of and contributions to the larger Samvera community., and A presentation at Samvera Virtual Connect 2019 described thus

- Description:
- A lightning talk at Samvera Virtual Connect 2019 described thus and What if the Hyrax web application were to support and include, by default, controlled vocabularies from marginalized communities? Currently Hyrax supplies a default set of descriptive metadata fields for describing uploaded objects. This set of fields includes Keyword (a required field) and Subject (an optional field). Neither of these fields are controlled by a vocabulary of terms upon install. The Questioning Authority (QA) gem exists as an option to configure and apply controlled vocabularies for use with fields such as these in Hyrax. While QA can be configured to work with nearly any vocabulary, the current vocabularies offered through the gem when it is installed include LCSH/NAF/GFT/MPT/DGT, FAST, Geonames, MeSH, Agrovoc, DBPedia, NALT, and Getty (AAT, TGN, ULAN). These are widely used mainstream sources for topical subject and genre description but also tend to reflect the current dominant mainstream power structure in the United States (white, male, straight, able-bodied, middle-class, Christian, Anglo). Should we increase the list of vocabularies available, by default, in the QA gem? Should we go beyond that and enable vocabulary choices on the default Subject and Keyword Hyrax fields? This lightning talk will discuss these questions and consider vocabulary options that would provide more inclusive descriptive capabilities.

- Description:
- A lightning talk at Samvera Virtual Connect 2019 described thus and For the past several years the Fedora community has prioritized alignment with linked data best practices and modern web standards. We are now shifting our attention back to Fedora's digital preservation roots with a focus on the Oxford Common File Layout (OCFL). The OFCL is an application-independent approach to the storage of digital objects in a structured, transparent, and predictable manner. Fedora 6.0, the next major release, will replace the current ModeShape backend with a more scalable and performant implementation that persists data in accordance with the OCFL specification. This presentation will provide an overview of the Fedora 6.0 design, including an introduction to the OCFL and how it will be implemented. It will be of interest to Samvera community members who want to track Fedora developments and understand their impact on Samvera applications.

- Does writing or reviewing code make you stressed, fatigued, or anxious? In this session Glen will share the mindful approach he takes to writing and reviewing code at the University of Cincinnati Libraries. Mindfulness has been used to reduce stress and increase the quality of people's lives and it can be used during software development as well. Learn how being present in the moment, focusing, and empathizing with users can lead to a better product and actually be therapeutic for the developer. and A presentation at Samvera Connect 2019 described thus

- A presentation at Samvera Connect 2019 described thus and Agile is an approach to software development that emphasizes team collaboration, continual planning, continual learning, and incremental delivery versus delivering everything at the end, perfectly and all at once. This talk aims to give a high level overview of Agile development and how the academic community could benefit from being more agile. We will cover the 4 core values and 12 principles upon which Agile was founded. We will also cover Agile's most widely used frameworks, Scrum, as a specific use case. We will go over Scrum's roles, events, artifacts, and the rules of how to play this highly collaborative game.

- Description:
- I will use Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning techniques to analyze issue backlogs in applications from institutions throughout the community. I will apply a variety of techniques in an attempt to answer questions like, What kinds of open issues do we have in general as a community? Can I extract an interesting set of widely-desired features or widely-held use cases? Can I identify connections that might lead to collaboration across institutions? What solutions already exist that might advance open issues? Can I link open issues in one backlog to merged PRs in another repository? What have people been working on recently? Can we characterize the full set of issues that have been closed over the past year? What patterns of development do repositories follow? Can we describe the life cycle of repository development by aligning issues based on their creation / completion dates relative to the initial commit? These may or may not be the exact questions my talk will address, depending on the direction the project naturally takes. I will focus on applications in use or under development at institutions, as opposed to community-maintained engines and core gems. This talk will describe my process, results, and evaluate the success of the endeavor., and A presentation at Samvera Connect 2019 described thus

- A presentation at Samvera Connect 2019 described thus and Although it feels like we just migrated from CONTENTdm to Hydra/Fedora 3, it's time to adjust course back to Hyrax! Oregon Digital's Metadata Team will talk about strategies and challenges with metadata preparation, remediation before migration begins and mapping updates. The Migration Team will talk about the gem we're building, hyrax-migrator, to allow us to migrate over 465,000 assets (files and metadata). We’ll cover the design and implementation of the gem which supports migrating assets both locally (for dev and testing) and remotely (for production, on AWS S3), and share our progress with a batch of about 1000 ‘seed data’ assets, as well as our goals for scaling up in the coming months.

- A presentation at Samvera Connect 2019 described thus and This presentation will be a high level overview of the University of Michigan Library's plans for repository technology development. Themes, principles, and plans will be shared. We are continuously challenged to expand our capabilities and extend our reach to match the rapid evolution of research and scholarship in the digital age. We have seen unprecedented rates of content growth in recent years as our campus partners have also advanced in the digital realm. It is no longer just about texts and images. Research data, audio, moving images, and all kinds of complex born-digital materials like enhanced e-books have entered into the scene. The Library has very intentionally placed itself in the center of campus activities for more than two decades. We aspire now, as much as ever, to provide innovative solutions for this unique set of circumstances and uphold our commitments far into the future. We are building next generation infrastructure for digital preservation and access that is adaptable, scalable and sustainable as the needs of campus continue to change.

- Description:
- A presentation at Samvera Connect 2019 described thus and Northwestern University Libraries (NUL) became a Hydra Partner in early 2012. Over the past 7+ years, we produced bespoke applications locally using the Hydra/Samvera codebase, worked on many iterations of a stand-alone grant-funded Hydra/Samvera product with another Partner institution, contributed effort to the development of Hyrax, implemented Hyrax as a component in a larger repository ecosystem, and shifted our repository services to the cloud. As we have evolved, we have gone through many changes in our local culture, in our user needs, in our codebase, and with our talent. One of the organizational culture changes is the shift of NUL to a learning organization. This change has made us more risk tolerant than in the past. It has allowed NUL to solve its local need of large-scale fast ingestion and description using novel approaches and technologies (Elixir, AWS services, Lambdas, etc). This presentation will discuss how these organizational changes and approaches to technology projects made us privilege the value of Samvera as a community of shared values and ideas over its shared codebase.

- Description:
- Many institutions need to import, export, and migrate data in bulk, and the ability to do this easily should be a fundamental service offered by any repository. For Hyrax, there are a range of home-grown and community solutions focused on specific use cases but there are no easily reusable community solutions. That’s starting to change and we’d like to talk about our specific experience building ‘Bulkrax’ and ‘Zizia’, two bulk import-export engines for Hyrax. This talk will outline the current status of our two projects, covering the design and approach taken, alongside features such as OAI-PMH import, and CSV import and export. We'll also talk about where Bulkrax and Zizia are going in the near future. We’ll show how each can be adopted, configured, and extended to meet local use cases, and how these projects are meeting the requirements set out by 2018’s ‘Batch Import-Export Working Group’. We’ll also discuss how best to move forward as a community around this issue, This will mean developing not only software but also shared community practice for managing the flow of bulk metadata from legacy systems and digitization projects into Samvera repositories., and A presentation at Samvera Connect 2019 described thus

- Description:
- This article centres on the recently completed REMAP Project undertaken at the University of Hull, which has been a key step toward realising a larger vision of the role a repository can play in enabling and supporting digital content management for an institution. The first step was the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC)-funded RepoMMan Project that the team undertook between 2005 and 2007. The second step has been the REMAP Project itself, a key component of a university's information management. In this vision the institutional repository provides not only a showcase for finished digital output, but also a workspace in which members of the University can, if they wish, develop those same materials." This remains the case but with REMAP we added in notions of records management and digital preservation (RMDP) once the materials were placed in the repository. Thus the repository can play a key part throughout the lifetime of the content. It turns out that others share this vision of repository-enabled management over the full lifecycle of born-digital materials, a concept that some are calling the "scholar's workbench". (Others are calling it the "scholars' workbench", Hull uses the Fedora repository software, its development is undertaken by the not-for-profit organisation Fedora Commons. Hull will also be working with King's College London on the CLIF project to December 2010, work that will run in parallel with and complement Hydra. In the Ariadne article describing the work of RepoMMan we wrote, "The vision at Hull was, and is, of a repository placed at the heart of a Web Services architecture, the community has not yet decided quite where the apostrophe belongs!), and JISC-funded again, this second two-year project further developed the work that RepoMMan had started. The third step, more of a leap maybe, is a three-year venture (2008-11), the Hydra Project, being undertaken in partnership with colleagues at Stanford University, the University of Virginia and Fedora Commons

In “Sites of Memory, Acts of Erasure,” Heidi Aronson Kolk will explore the unusual potency of the well-preserved material archive, while challenging us to consider its dark twin––the site of erasure, forgetting and annihilation.
