4. Structural Metadata Editor: A React component for visualizing and displaying audio and video clips
- Description:
- A lightning talk at Samvera Virtual Connect 2019 described thus and Avalon Media System is upgrading it's UI component for handling structural metadata editing for an audio or visual work. The user can select and organize timespans in an AV work by manually typing bounding times and titles, or by interacting with a visual representation of the waveform. Technologies used are Peak.js and ReactJS.

5. Creating javascript components to provide rich user experiences for search and browse
- Description:
- Modern javascript frameworks like React and Vue facilitate building dynamic, rich user interfaces (like thematic sites or research tools). In this lightning talk, we'll show how we each built search components using these frameworks which use the Blacklight API but not the Blacklight UI. We'll also discuss how these components are being utilized and possibilities for making shared community javascript components. 7. Case Study: Batch update : What we talk about when we talk about design thinking
- Description:
- A presentation given at Samvera Connect 2020 On-line described thus, using a recent major batch update feature as a case study. We’ll explore how our approach allowed us to stay connected to our users and helped keep our development team in sync. Finally, we’ll reflect on what we’ve found most successful in this approach as well as stumbling blocks we encountered along the way. It starts with addressing a specific user need or problem. Using design-thinking techniques, we next generate visual solutions through rudimentary wire framing, white boarding sessions and architecture discussions. We then move to API design and mocking before starting development with two teams working independently, from the API, outwards. This presentation will demonstrate the iterative approach in action

They were not only new to Samvera, they were brand new developers in training. 10. Redesigning BrowseEverything
- Description:
- A presentation at Samvera Connect 2019 described thus and BrowseEverything is a Gem which provides developers with an API and a set of user interface components for uploading files from cloud storage services and Samvera repository applications. As a core component, this Gem is actively maintained by members of the Samvera Community, and within the past year has had an interest group chartered in order to provide some set of guidance around its continued use and development. While previous releases of BrowseEverything have proven to be robust and sufficient in providing file upload functionality to Samvera applications (most notably, various releases of Hyrax), there exist a number of architectural changes for the codebase which have long been considered necessary in order to improve the user experience provided by the user interface components for the Gem. These will include standardizing the API in order to facilitate those who wish to develop additional drivers for currently unsupported cloud storage solutions. This presentation aims to outline the future proposed changes to the Gem itself, as well as to demonstrate the upcoming design changes for the user interface components. Insight and direction from attendees will be welcome, as we invite all interested parties in shaping the roadmap for this Gem.

- How can we include user experience [UX] best practices in Hydra's core development work? How can UX experts contribute effectively to the Hydra project? How can we ensure that decisions around elements that affect the user experience are based on good evidence? Through case studies and facilitated discussion, this panel will seek to demonstrate and explore how to better integrate end-user feedback into the Hydra development stream. Dave McCallum from the University of Oregon explores issues of accessibility and the user experience. Jenn Colt from Cornell University and Sonya Betz from the University of Alberta will facilitate an active discussion around building UX into Hydra development workflows, and will ask participants to suggest strategies for including real users and their feedback in design and development decisions.
