202. serverless-iiif: From flail to scale in a year or less

Description:
A presentation given at Samvera Connect 2020 On-line described thus and After trying to navigate deployment, configuration, performance, and scaling issues of several different image servers and support infrastructure (Cantaloupe, Aware, Riiif, nginx, and SquidCache, to name a few), we decided to see if we could build something less general/configurable but far more suited to our use case and runtime environment. serverless-iiif started out as a bare bones, proof-of-concept demonstration of how a scalable, high-performance IIIF image server could be implemented in a small, inexpensive AWS Lambda function. Just over a year later, the project serves as the basis for high-volume IIIF services running in production at Northwestern University, Princeton University, the University of Notre Dame, and the Royal Pavilion & Museums, Brighton & Hove. This presentation will cover the project from its beginnings (as a small demo repository carved out of Northwestern's cloud repository infrastructure), through a number of forks, merges, performance enhancements, deployment improvements, and into production. 204. Your vote matters! Community input for Advancing Hyku feature prioritization

A presentation given at Samvera Connect 2020 On-line described thus, Advancing Hyku Project aims to support the growth of open access through institutional repositories by introducing significant structural improvements and new features to the Samvera Community’s Hyku Institutional Repository. Features include full metrics and altmetrics, ORCiD profile sync, auto-population, in-browser viewing and annotation, and pathways to long-term preservation. The project partners are University of Virginia Library, Ubiquity Press and the British Library, with funding from Arcadia, a charitable fund of philanthropists Lisbet Rausing and Peter Baldwin. The project began October 2019 and is scheduled to conclude by August 2021. This presentation will provide an update on the project which is coming to an end of its first year. Presenters will introduce the developments made so far, architectural review for structural improvements for the Hyku framework, collaborations to strengthen the project deliverables and the forthcoming plans for the coming year. The session also aims to receive feedback from the audience on the set of priorities within the project. Our Samvera-based institutional repository is nearing eight years old, and one can safely say it is middle aged-- and with middle age comes a mid-life crisis. Over the course of the past year, the current product owners have examined the role and vision of the repository and embraced the role of maintainers, advocating for critical external needs. Balancing the technical needs and costs of an aging system while providing new services to meet user needs with a limited technical staff has required being realistic about both available resources and institutional priorities. In this talk, we will discuss our experiences, our methods for refining the focus of a large project, focusing developer work to yield maximum payoffs, and centering the repository to be more useful to the campus community by meeting users where they are. 217. SWORDv3: Deposit protocol, from draft to reference implementation

Description:
Between 2018 and 2019, Jisc funded an effort to refresh the SWORD repository deposit protocol, with modern repository use cases in mind, especially around data repositories. As a result we produced a draft specification, extensively reviewed by a large number of the repositories community, including those from the Samvera and Fedora communities. In 2019, NII provided funding to produce a reference implementation, and we have been working to prove that the specification is implementable and viable. That work concluded in July 2020 with the release of a client library and a server library in Python. Now the SWORDv3 team is looking outward to the rest of the repositories community, looking to engage them in development for their platforms, and to enable novel integrations. This presentation will introduce the spec for those that are not familiar, and describe the technical and community-building work that is ongoing, and call for engagement by the Samvera technical community in working with SWORDv3. Building and using an open source community-supported system to manage audiovisual materials for a digital archive/library has many advantages and challenges. Being able to dictate the features, have a system speak to specific needs, and have staff on hand that can change or fix problems is certainly appealing. Embarking on this effort with an established open community, such as Samvera, has the advantages of a robust community of developers and service vendors to turn to for help. Managing needed customisations to core code base, keeping track of updates and contributing to the community, however, is challenging. For WGBH, a public television station with a robust 60-year archive, most customisations are due to the use PBCore to structure the metadata of the audio-visual items. 228. Avalon Update 2018: Reimagining Avalon in the Samvera Community

Description:
Avalon will demonstrate how an initial plan to re-architect Avalon Media System utilizing the Hyrax stack has paired with efforts to ensure greater sustainability of both Avalon and Samvera as framework and community. Following that goal, the past year the Avalon team has made terrific strides toward the development of Avalon 7, in part through community collaborative work with Hyrax and Samvera teams. Additionally, we'll cover work aimed at preservation and scaled hosting of Avalon, as well as a range of activities including IIIF development for audiovisual media, collaborations with Avalon users, new features such as OHMS integration, our participation in community interest and working groups, and our efforts at outreach to find and assist new and potential users. Description:
Samvera Partners must sign a formal one page Letter of Agreement (LoA) in support of the formal and legal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the Steering Group in April 2012. A composite document comprising the 2012 MoU, amendments made to it in 2018 to reflect the name change from Hydra to Samvera, changes made in 2019 to reflect governance changes in the Community, a version of the MoU showing the effect of these amendments, and a blank Letter of Agreement are in this downloadable document.

The Governance Working Group was chartered by Partners thus, A one-page summary of the discussion, documentation, and feedback to-date related to the various governance models under consideration. * Synthesis, This step will be shepherded by Steering, as the proposed model will also be assessed for legal, licensing, and MOU implications prior to further community review. * Proposal, Development of a draft governance proposal and incremental steps to implementation if appropriate * Community Input, Circulation of the final proposal for potential adoption at a Spring/Summer 2018 partner meeting, The Governance working group is a small group chartered by the community to help synthesize and formalize the various governance discussions and documents currently underway. The scope of the Samvera Governance Working Group’s deliverables will be, Circulation of the above to Partners, stakeholders, and the Steering group for review, comment, and change requests to the proposal * Legal Review, * Context, A revised governance proposal based on community, stakeholder, & legal feedback * Community Review, and A summary of the themes and issues that the community hopes to address by refining existing or adopting new governance practices and structures. Ideally identifies key differences and decision points between the models provided for evaluation and current model.
