6. Making TACOs for Hydras
- Description:
- A recording of a presentation at Samvera Connect 2018 described thus, prototyping a core component of our new architecture to be horizontally scalable, designing a new architecture for our digital library with a wide ranging set of requirements and users, Stanford University Library has a robust digital library system called the Stanford Digital Repository. This repository holds a little under 500 TB of materials in preservation, and a little less than that for online access, from our cultural heritage digitization efforts and institutional repository outputs. These materials are managed across 90+ codebases serving a variety of functions from self-deposit web applications, to a nearly 10 year old parallel processing framework, to a digital repository assets publication mechanism leading into our Blacklight, Spotlight, and Geoblacklight applications - among other services and needs. At the core of this system is a Fedora 3 store. With Fedora 3 now end-of-lifed, and our system suffering from limited to no horizontal scalability options, we’re revisiting our system and architecture. We are writing it from the start with a goal to have data-forward, distributed microservices and some event-driven processing components. TACO, our new core management API, is the heart of this new architecture, and is currently being developed as a prototype. This talk will walk through the process of analysing our current system via a dataflows analysis, then planning how to create ‘seams’ in our current system to migrate towards our new system in an evolutionary fashion instead of a turn-key migration. 9. Synchronizing Samvera Repositories
- Description:
- This presentation aims to explore the possible integration of Samvera digital object repositories with additional web services using message brokers. There have been cases in which it is necessary to synchronize content updates between repositories and additional library systems such as library catalogs or digital exhibit publishing software. Within this context, developers may benefit by exploring architectural pattern in which a dedicated message broker receives asynchronous notifications of repository content updates, new ingestions, and deletions. In response to having received these messages, the broker may then broadcast these events to other listening library systems. The library systems then may reindex or update their own content accordingly. A conceptual overview of this architectural pattern shall be provided, followed by an overview of an implementation local to the systems within the Princeton University Library (synchronizing content between implementations of Valkyrie and Spotlight using RabbitMQ). The outcome of this presentation would be to identify other Samvera adopters who may also be utilizing message brokers, with the ultimate aim of determining whether or not this approach would be beneficial to a larger number of community members. 15. Samvera for AULs: how the Samvera Community can be part of your digital strategy
- Description:
- * A knowledge of the Samvera Community, how it is structured and how it operates * A detailed appreciation of the Samvera vision statement and key elements within this to showcase how they can be of benefit to a library's strategic planning and delivery * An understanding of the ways in which library staff can engage and benefit from participation in the Samvera Community, exploring the benefits of broader involvement with colleagues beyond a local library * An insight into the ways that technical developments within the Samvera Community can support digital strategy * An appreciation of the ways that Samvera can support digital content management requirements and connect different areas of library activity The aim of this workshop is to provide a space where senior staff involved in strategic planning can be introduced to Samvera and the Community, to hear about how Samvera can make a positive contribution to their digital strategy and how to make this work for them and their staff. The content of the workshop will be akin to the Introduction to Samvera session that has run before, but will be additional to this and focused specifically on addressing the strategic benefits that AUL and senior staff in organisations seek when engaging with external initiatives. Attendees are encouraged to make use of this workshop to discover what makes Samvera tick and how this can align with local strategic planning. Alongside content delivery there will be a focus on discussion and questions to help identify what the Samvera Community can offer, and what it needs to offer, to meet local requirements. 17. Supporting collaboration in Hyku: Workflows, tools, and design
- Description:
- A presentation given at Samvera Connect 2020 On-line described thus and Collaboration is more than just sharing costs, and the PALCI and PALNI consortia are pushing that idea into our repository management. We want to create the flexibility for both IR workflows and more “traditional” library-owned content within the same instance of Hyku. We also want to enable libraries to collaborate and share work, not just with their consortial partners, but also among their own departments across campus. To us, this means enhancing the ability to manage user and tenant settings to enable different workflows. By working with a number of libraries testing out the Hyku multi-tenant option, we realized that a robust dashboard for user/role assignment and the expansion of a few more roles would enable us to manage these flexible workflow options. PALNI and PALCI are working with Notch 8 to enhance the underlying “role” and “group” functionality in Hyku and develop a new administrative dashboard to control permissions across multiple tenants. We will also be expanding role and group functions within tenant management. This presentation will discuss how we researched and developed our requirements as well as the plan and progress to date. 18. What to do when your repository enters middle age
- Description:
- Our Samvera-based institutional repository is nearing eight years old, and one can safely say it is middle aged-- and with middle age comes a mid-life crisis. Over the course of the past year, the current product owners have examined the role and vision of the repository and embraced the role of maintainers, advocating for critical external needs. Balancing the technical needs and costs of an aging system while providing new services to meet user needs with a limited technical staff has required being realistic about both available resources and institutional priorities. In this talk, we will discuss our experiences, our methods for refining the focus of a large project, focusing developer work to yield maximum payoffs, and centering the repository to be more useful to the campus community by meeting users where they are. 25. Michigan's Repository Technology Plans
- Description:
- A presentation at Samvera Connect 2019 described thus and This presentation will be a high level overview of the University of Michigan Library's plans for repository technology development. Themes, principles, and plans will be shared. We are continuously challenged to expand our capabilities and extend our reach to match the rapid evolution of research and scholarship in the digital age. We have seen unprecedented rates of content growth in recent years as our campus partners have also advanced in the digital realm. It is no longer just about texts and images. Research data, audio, moving images, and all kinds of complex born-digital materials like enhanced e-books have entered into the scene. The Library has very intentionally placed itself in the center of campus activities for more than two decades. We aspire now, as much as ever, to provide innovative solutions for this unique set of circumstances and uphold our commitments far into the future. We are building next generation infrastructure for digital preservation and access that is adaptable, scalable and sustainable as the needs of campus continue to change.

27. Sustaining a Large-Scale Repository Architecture: Behind the Scenes of the Stanford Digital Repository
- Description:
- In 2006, Stanford Libraries built the Stanford Digital Repository (SDR). The system has served us well—thirteen years later, SDR contains over 2.0 million objects (~500 terabytes of content). We built SDR using open-source software (including Samvera, Fedora, and Blacklight) and an additional ~300,000 lines of custom code. We believe it is among the largest and most complex repository systems in research libraries, and yet the challenges we face are common. We have grown SDR to a point where it is extremely difficult for us to sustain. Some of our foundational technologies are not only aging but are beyond end-of-life. Meanwhile, we are challenged to continue offering a valuable, performant, highly-available repository service to our stakeholders. Over the past two years, we have analyzed the factors complicating sustainability, that work has led to operational changes that improve the current state and a plan for sustaining repository development combining open-source and custom software. Our presentation highlights the reasons SDR became unsustainable and shares areas where we have made improvements and where we go next. We believe the lessons we have learned are widely applicable to institutions that develop their own repository solutions., and A presentation at Samvera Connect 2019 described thus

28. Implementing a new Carolina Digital Repository: customizations and change
- Description:
- A presentation at Samvera Connect 2019, originally titled "Creating a new Carolina Digital Repository, customizations and change", described thus, and In June 2019, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill University Libraries Software Development and Repository Services departments launched the new Carolina Digital Repository (CDR) platform, built on Hyrax. The new repository houses scholarly materials in support of UNC’s Open Access policy and supports many existing workflows and use cases such as student papers, OA books, and datasets. In this presentation we will describe existing and new use cases and show how we customized Hyrax to meet those needs. We will also share lessons learned and future plans for the CDR.
