2. Extending preservation functionality in Hyrax 3, Fedora 4, and AWS
- Description:
- The Emory Libraries implemented a second-generation preservation infrastructure in 2019 utilizing Hyrax 3, Fedora 4 and AWS, following a requirements gathering phase that included developing a preservation policy and a review of preservation community best practices. This presentation describes our solution design including locally-defined entities such as preservation workflows and events and FileSet expansion to support derivative files. We will also address implementation lessons learned while leveraging existing Samvera functionality and building new features to bridge gaps between existing framework components. 3. What to do when your repository enters middle age
- Description:
- Our Samvera-based institutional repository is nearing eight years old, and one can safely say it is middle aged-- and with middle age comes a mid-life crisis. Over the course of the past year, the current product owners have examined the role and vision of the repository and embraced the role of maintainers, advocating for critical external needs. Balancing the technical needs and costs of an aging system while providing new services to meet user needs with a limited technical staff has required being realistic about both available resources and institutional priorities. In this talk, we will discuss our experiences, our methods for refining the focus of a large project, focusing developer work to yield maximum payoffs, and centering the repository to be more useful to the campus community by meeting users where they are. 6. Enhanced Preservation, Fewer Migrations: Fedora 6 and the Oxford Common File Layout
- Description:
- Fedora 6, the next major version of Fedora, will focus on digital preservation by aligning with the Oxford Common File Layout (OCFL). The OFCL is an application-independent approach to the storage of digital objects in a structured, transparent, and predictable manner. This provides many benefits, including, storage diversity, to ensure content can be stored on diverse storage infrastructures including cloud object stores, parsability, both by humans and machines, to ensure content can be understood in the absence of original software, robustness against errors, corruption, and migration between storage technologies, versioning, so repositories can make changes to objects allowing its history to persist, and and completeness, so that a repository can be rebuilt from the files it stores. This presentation will provide an overview of the Fedora 6 design, including a brief introduction to the OCFL and how it is being implemented, along with a summary of development progress to date and the anticipated timeline for the 6.0 release. The video recording of this segment is available at the 'Related URL' below.

7. Extending Fedora: API-X and Import/Export
- Description:
- Fedora is the flexible, extensible, open source repository platform that commonly underlies Samvera implementations. Fedora provides a number of core services that Samvera already uses, such as CRUD operations, versioning, and fixity, and several new, potentially useful extended services have been introduced within the last year. The API Extension Framework provides a means of binding services to repository objects in order to extend the functionality of Fedora, while the Import/Export Utility makes it easier to get content into and out of Fedora in standardized formats and packages. This workshop will introduce both of these new services and discuss how they might be used in the context of Samvera. Participants will also have an opportunity to try them out via hands-on exercises in combination with a virtual machine. and A workshop given at Samvera Connect 2017 described thus

8. From Hydra to Samvera: An open source community journey
- Description:
- The Hydra Project started in 2008 through a partnership between the University of Hull, the University of Virginia, Stanford University and Fedora Commons (now DuraSpace) to create tools that support use of the Fedora digital repository. Hull adopted the software outputs from this collaboration for its institutional repository in 2011 and remains an active Partner in the community, serving on the Steering Group and fostering development of the community and software in the UK and mainland Europe and The community now has 35 formal Partners and over 70 known adopters internationally. In June 2017 Hydra changed its name to Samvera, Icelandic for 'being together', to recognize the value gained from multiple institutions working together to create the underlying common basis upon which multiple different repository solutions have been implemented. Samvera can be adopted through a set of tools to develop your own repository (using a package called Hyrax as the starting point) and is also available as a complete repository solution, hosted or local, through the use of Hyku. The community has been at the heart of making Samvera a success, and will continue to underpin its future direction.

9. Fedora 6.0 and the Oxford Common File Layout
- Description:
- A lightning talk at Samvera Virtual Connect 2019 described thus and For the past several years the Fedora community has prioritized alignment with linked data best practices and modern web standards. We are now shifting our attention back to Fedora's digital preservation roots with a focus on the Oxford Common File Layout (OCFL). The OFCL is an application-independent approach to the storage of digital objects in a structured, transparent, and predictable manner. Fedora 6.0, the next major release, will replace the current ModeShape backend with a more scalable and performant implementation that persists data in accordance with the OCFL specification. This presentation will provide an overview of the Fedora 6.0 design, including an introduction to the OCFL and how it will be implemented. It will be of interest to Samvera community members who want to track Fedora developments and understand their impact on Samvera applications.

11. Samvera and Fedora 4 Performance
- Description:
- A presentation given at Connect 2017 described thus and In this presentation, we present Fedora 4’s performance in different use cases. These use cases are the most general use cases that were developed by the Fedora 4 performance team. We compare the performance between different versions of Fedora 4 and demonstrate the improvement between these versions. We will also describe the procedures of these performance experiments and demonstrate the software we use (Ansible, AWS, and JMeter). Our performance experiments are conducted in the AWS ecosystem, and we use an R graph tool to visualize the JMeter result. With the AWS grant, we can do many different performance experiments in many scales. Moreover, it is easy to repeat and verify the performance results using AWS. The Fedora 4 performance team wants to know more about the Samvera community’s interests related to the Fedora 4 performance. We plan to gather more use cases from the Samvera community, including middleware such as Solr, Camel, and Fuseki, etc. We can investigate, explore issues, and continue enhancing the future of Fedora 4.
