Understand what Samvera is and how to participate Understand how to use Samvera Understand the value of Samvera Samvera is a community, a set of tools, and a collection of ready-to run and hosted applications to help build a digital repository for your institution. The community drives the specification and development of sustainable open source technology and honing best practices for managing digital content. This workshop will provide an on-boarding and general entrée to the Samvera community and solutions for non-coders. The first part will provide an overview of Samvera solutions, hosting options and the community – what is it, why is it different? It will showcase applications solving a diverse set of needs and organizations, and discuss the how the community at large works to enable these. The second part will give a general technical overview designed for a non-technical audience. The resources needed to maintain and contribute to a hosted or custom Samvera solution will be discussed, resources that exist to get started will be highlighted plus how to contribute to the community technically and non-technically. The final part will discuss value and how to pitch Samvera and get institutional support. 9. Hydra: A Technical and Community Framework For Customized, Shared Repository Applications

A presentation given at the Open Repositories conference in 2010. In part, the proposal reads and While repositories provide obvious benefits in hosting and managing content, it is equally clear that there is no “one size fits all” solution to the range of digital asset management needs at a typical institution, much less across institutions. A system that supports the submission, approval and dissemination of electronic theses and dissertations, for example, has demonstrably different requirements than a digitization workflow solution, an e-science data repository, or media preservation and access system. There is a clear need in the repository community to readily develop and deploy content-, domain-, and institution-specific solutions that integrate the flexibility and richness of customized applications and workflows with the underlying power of repositories for content management, access and preservation. This paper will provide an overview of Hydra’s philosophy, architecture, and components, as well as demonstrations of various Hydra installations. The paper will also provide a progress report on Hydra development to date and its overall roadmap, as well as provide observations on the successes and challenges of community-based development of shared repository solutions.

10. The REMAP Project: steps along the way to a repository-enabled information environment

Description:
This article centres on the recently completed REMAP Project undertaken at the University of Hull, which has been a key step toward realising a larger vision of the role a repository can play in enabling and supporting digital content management for an institution. The first step was the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC)-funded RepoMMan Project that the team undertook between 2005 and 2007. The second step has been the REMAP Project itself, a key component of a university's information management. In this vision the institutional repository provides not only a showcase for finished digital output, but also a workspace in which members of the University can, if they wish, develop those same materials." This remains the case but with REMAP we added in notions of records management and digital preservation (RMDP) once the materials were placed in the repository. Thus the repository can play a key part throughout the lifetime of the content. It turns out that others share this vision of repository-enabled management over the full lifecycle of born-digital materials, a concept that some are calling the "scholar's workbench". (Others are calling it the "scholars' workbench", Hull uses the Fedora repository software, its development is undertaken by the not-for-profit organisation Fedora Commons. Hull will also be working with King's College London on the CLIF project to December 2010, work that will run in parallel with and complement Hydra. In the Ariadne article describing the work of RepoMMan we wrote, "The vision at Hull was, and is, of a repository placed at the heart of a Web Services architecture, the community has not yet decided quite where the apostrophe belongs!), and JISC-funded again, this second two-year project further developed the work that RepoMMan had started. The third step, more of a leap maybe, is a three-year venture (2008-11), the Hydra Project, being undertaken in partnership with colleagues at Stanford University, the University of Virginia and Fedora Commons

20. Collaborating to Manage Research Data

however, library enduring commitments in print and current operations, and complex campus organizations often hinder libraries¹ ability to quickly respond to the data needs of the academy. Notre Dame¹s investment in research was recently reinforced by the university¹s approval of the expansion of ten disciplines, such as computational data, adult stem cell research, and nuclear physics. There is much needed support for research data on campus. The Hesburgh Libraries has been building an institutional digital repository since winter 2012. To respond to the trending needs, the Libraries switched gears to a user-centered and agile approach to develop data curation and access services since June 2013. Our goal remains to accept all scholarly outputs (text, images, video and audio), but with an imminent emphasis on research support. Our strategy is to grow our data curation services and our user base simultaneously, and to build success stories to drive adoptions along the way. Early adopters were identified with the help of our subject librarians, and they determined the most critical baseline features for the Libraries to develop. We also leveraged Hydra open source solutions and collaborated with Northwestern University, Indiana University, and the University of Virginia to create a new community shared Institutional Repository (IR) system. We have worked with our early adopters to pilot features since summer. We plan to launch an early access release by November 2013 and a full rollout by April 2014. We will share our development philosophy to overcome resource shortages to meet high demands on research support, our strategy to reach and develop our user base and roadmap, our insights on faculty¹s needs on research support, and our methodology to leverage and contribute to open source tools. A quick demo of our curation tool will be provided at the end of the session. and A presentation to the CNI Members' Meeting in December 2013. This session provides Notre Dame¹s experience as a case study to provision research data curation and access services. Managing research outputs becomes a tall order of many universities, given their determined agenda to pursue research excellence. Data curation, preservation, and access are paramount to university academic mission, and academic and research libraries are some of the few entities of the universities that carry such functions

21. From content silos to an integrated digital library

Description:
The Royal Library was very fast to adapt the emerging web technologies in the mid 1990’s. The web was used as an integrated part of digitization projects, resulting in a number of specially tailored web sites for various types of content, manuscripts, images, literary texts, journal articles, etc. Each project and type of material would typically result in its own data model, metadata format, workflow, and a database/repository that was tightly coupled with the web application. In later years, as the throughput on the digitization production lines has increased, more automated ways of dissemination have been developed. However this has not been able to fundamentally replace the tendency to building silos around different types of content. Being both national and university library, we can expect that in the future accessioned material will largely be born digital. In order to handle this situation, we have decided to start implementing an integrated digital library infrastructure, covering all aspects of digital collection building and management. The assumptions are that some metadata will be shared between all types of digital materials, and that the main steps in a digital object life-cycle will be common for all object types. In my presentation I am going to show how we are building a technical infrastructure in support of this, using building blocks such as Hydra, Fedora Commons, Solr, and Blacklight. 31. "Headless" Metadata for Library Discovery: NYU's Ichabod Project

A presentation given at the Open Repositories conference in 2015 held in Indianapolis, described thus, Fedora, Hydra, Solr, and Blacklight. Called “Ichabod,” this tool has allowed us to ingest, normalize, and enrich metadata from diverse systems of record and make it consumable by our main discovery tool, which is powered by the Ex-Libris product Primo. We developed Ichabod using the Agile methodology and involving developers from three distinct NYU Libraries groups. The software will lay the groundwork for future innovation in the areas of metadata management and discovery for repository content. The relationships we established have already made it possible for a similar collaboration arrangement on two other projects, with more to come in the future., and From DSpace to Drupal, NYU has a variety of systems to ingest and display curated digital content. * Understand what Samvera is and how to participate * Understand how to use Samvera * Understand the value of Samvera Samvera is a community, a set of tools, and a collection of ready-to run and hosted applications to help build a digital repository for your institution. The community drives the specification and development of sustainable open source technology and honing best practices for managing digital content. This workshop will provide an on-boarding and general entrée to the Samvera community and solutions for non-coders. The first part will provide an overview of Samvera solutions, hosting options and the community – what is it, why is it different? It will showcase applications solving a diverse set of needs and organizations, and discuss the how the community at large works to enable these. The second part will give a general technical overview designed for a non-technical audience. The resources needed to maintain and contribute to a hosted or custom Samvera solution will be discussed, resources that exist to get started will be highlighted plus how to contribute to the community technically and non-technically. The final part will discuss value and how to pitch Samvera and get institutional support. It will discuss the advantages of being part of the community and how that strengthens the sustainability of the tools, the applications, and the community overall. 37. Building a GLAM ecosystem: Human and machine collaborations for digitized collections

In this presentation, team members will talk about the past two years of experimentation, development, and conversation around how to connect our community to our cultural heritage collections through multiple integrations, both human and technological. At a high-level, we’ll discuss our technical architecture that uses legacy applications like ArchivesSpace, an aging Fedora repository, and a decades-old museum database together with the IIIF framework and open-source GatsbyJS. And perhaps more importantly, we’ll outline the cross-departmental team structure that has developers talking to museum curators, library cataloguers, archivists, and everyone in between. 47. Sustaining a Large-Scale Repository Architecture: Behind the Scenes of the Stanford Digital Repository

Description:
In 2006, Stanford Libraries built the Stanford Digital Repository (SDR). The system has served us well—thirteen years later, SDR contains over 2.0 million objects (~500 terabytes of content). We built SDR using open-source software (including Samvera, Fedora, and Blacklight) and an additional ~300,000 lines of custom code. We believe it is among the largest and most complex repository systems in research libraries, and yet the challenges we face are common. We have grown SDR to a point where it is extremely difficult for us to sustain. Some of our foundational technologies are not only aging but are beyond end-of-life. Meanwhile, we are challenged to continue offering a valuable, performant, highly-available repository service to our stakeholders. Over the past two years, we have analyzed the factors complicating sustainability, that work has led to operational changes that improve the current state and a plan for sustaining repository development combining open-source and custom software. Our presentation highlights the reasons SDR became unsustainable and shares areas where we have made improvements and where we go next. 50. Making TACOs for Hydras

Description:
A recording of a presentation at Samvera Connect 2018 described thus, prototyping a core component of our new architecture to be horizontally scalable, designing a new architecture for our digital library with a wide ranging set of requirements and users, Stanford University Library has a robust digital library system called the Stanford Digital Repository. This repository holds a little under 500 TB of materials in preservation, and a little less than that for online access, from our cultural heritage digitization efforts and institutional repository outputs. These materials are managed across 90+ codebases serving a variety of functions from self-deposit web applications, to a nearly 10 year old parallel processing framework, to a digital repository assets publication mechanism leading into our Blacklight, Spotlight, and Geoblacklight applications - among other services and needs. At the core of this system is a Fedora 3 store. With Fedora 3 now end-of-lifed, and our system suffering from limited to no horizontal scalability options, we’re revisiting our system and architecture. We are writing it from the start with a goal to have data-forward, distributed microservices and some event-driven processing components. TACO, our new core management API, is the heart of this new architecture, and is currently being developed as a prototype. This talk will walk through the process of analysing our current system via a dataflows analysis, then planning how to create ‘seams’ in our current system to migrate towards our new system in an evolutionary fashion instead of a turn-key migration.
