Building and using an open source community-supported system to manage audiovisual materials for a digital archive/library has many advantages and challenges. Being able to dictate the features, have a system speak to specific needs, and have staff on hand that can change or fix problems is certainly appealing. Embarking on this effort with an established open community, such as Samvera, has the advantages of a robust community of developers and service vendors to turn to for help. Managing needed customisations to core code base, keeping track of updates and contributing to the community, however, is challenging. For WGBH, a public television station with a robust 60-year archive, most customisations are due to the use PBCore to structure the metadata of the audio-visual items. This paper focuses on WGBH’s efforts to build a system for its Media Library and Archives based on the Samvera digital repository framework and its Hyrax and Avalon Media System ‘products’. and Abstract

streaming media protocols and their differences, file formats and codecs, Slides from an on-line workshop given at Samvera Connect 2020 On-line described thus, This workshop will provide a general overview of streaming media technologies and applications, as well as a hands-on portion where participants will configure a simple Rails application with a streaming server. Topics will include a brief overview of commonly used streaming servers and applications, both local and cloud-hosted, and and browser support. The workshop component will include a walk-through of setting up Nginx as a streaming server, building a Rails app with stream security and authorization. Docker containers will be provided.

Modern javascript frameworks like React and Vue facilitate building dynamic, rich user interfaces (like thematic sites or research tools). In this lightning talk, we'll show how we each built search components using these frameworks which use the Blacklight API but not the Blacklight UI. We'll also discuss how these components are being utilized and possibilities for making shared community javascript components. A presentation given at the Open Repositories conference in 2015 held in Indianapolis described thus and Avalon Media System requires support for complex structure and modular descriptive metadata management. Use cases and examples will examine options for Avalon in Fedora such as the RDF data model in Fedora 4, static XML datastreams, and external data stores to determine which path best fits structural and descriptive metadata needs for time-based media.

Indiana University and Northwestern University, in collaboration with nine partner institutions, recently completed the last year of a three-year IMLS-funded effort to build the Avalon Media System, an open source solution for managing and providing access to digital audio and video collections, based on Fedora and the Hydra repository software development framework. As the Avalon platform reaches maturity, several institutions are in the process of implementing Avalon both to replace current time-based media access solutions and to support new use cases. In addition, new funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation will support continued work to develop new features, grow and provide support for the community of adopters, and move Avalon towards organizational and financial sustainability. This panel will bring together project leaders from Indiana and Northwestern, along with Avalon community members at the University of Virginia and Stanford University, to share experiences of implementing Avalon at their institutions, integrating Avalon with other local systems, and supporting Avalon to enable a variety of use cases in research, teaching, and learning. For the past year, Avalon Media System has worked alongside members of the IIIF Community to co-develop the specifications for IIIF Presentation API version 3. This version moves beyond the two-dimensional image plane to include audio and video within the scope of media which can utilize IIIF to describe and manage content for use and re-use both with Avalon and by any viewer capable of presenting an object with a IIIF manifest. Avalon is excited about the possibilities for incorporating shareable structural metadata, as well as the ability to incorporate metadata along the timeline of time-based media. We will provide an overview of IIIF and the application of IIIF to AV content, including structural metadata and other features derived from the IIIF API. Join us for an update on Avalon metadata in Hyrax. The Avalon Media System is an open source system for managing and providing access to collections of digital audio and video. The project is led by the libraries of Indiana University Bloomington and Northwestern University and is funded in part by grants from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. We are working to incorporate Avalon descriptive, technical, and structural metadata into Hyrax, the open-source repository front end from the Samvera Community, creating an AudiovisualWork that can be added to Hyrax as a gem alongside other work types (like GenericWork and Image). We will share our progress so far, including mappings for bibliographic import functionality and how things look different between Avalon 6 and Avalon in Hyrax. Avalon in Hyrax will also be available as a standalone Hyrax application so we are both letting the Hyrax in and letting the Avalon out! Community and Sustainability", described thus, A presentation at Samvera Connect 2019, originally titled "Avalon Media System, and Over the last two years, the Avalon Media System team at the libraries of Indiana University and Northwestern University has worked toward developing a model of sustainability for a large open source project as part of a grant funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). As the grant comes to a close, the Avalon team will review the efforts undertaken over the course of the two-year cycle, discussing the challenges faced by the Avalon team, as well as points of success. The Avalon team will reflect upon the experience and how opportunities provided by the grant to take on new technical changes to the system, develop code in partnership, work toward better integration with the the larger Samvera community, and develop a smaller, focused community of Avalon users and stakeholders all pointed us toward how Avalon will proceed in the years going forward. The presentation will focus on our path forward focusing on Avalon on Hyrax, new features in recent releases, additional new features being developed on the current code base, and the challenges of aligning complex projects.

Avalon will demonstrate how an initial plan to re-architect Avalon Media System utilizing the Hyrax stack has paired with efforts to ensure greater sustainability of both Avalon and Samvera as framework and community. Following that goal, the past year the Avalon team has made terrific strides toward the development of Avalon 7, in part through community collaborative work with Hyrax and Samvera teams.
