509. The REMAP Project: steps along the way to a repository-enabled information environment
- Description:
- This article centres on the recently completed REMAP Project undertaken at the University of Hull, which has been a key step toward realising a larger vision of the role a repository can play in enabling and supporting digital content management for an institution. The first step was the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC)-funded RepoMMan Project that the team undertook between 2005 and 2007. The second step has been the REMAP Project itself, a key component of a university's information management. In this vision the institutional repository provides not only a showcase for finished digital output, but also a workspace in which members of the University can, if they wish, develop those same materials." This remains the case but with REMAP we added in notions of records management and digital preservation (RMDP) once the materials were placed in the repository. Thus the repository can play a key part throughout the lifetime of the content. It turns out that others share this vision of repository-enabled management over the full lifecycle of born-digital materials, a concept that some are calling the "scholar's workbench". (Others are calling it the "scholars' workbench", Hull uses the Fedora repository software, its development is undertaken by the not-for-profit organisation Fedora Commons. Hull will also be working with King's College London on the CLIF project to December 2010, work that will run in parallel with and complement Hydra. In the Ariadne article describing the work of RepoMMan we wrote, "The vision at Hull was, and is, of a repository placed at the heart of a Web Services architecture, the community has not yet decided quite where the apostrophe belongs!), and JISC-funded again, this second two-year project further developed the work that RepoMMan had started. The third step, more of a leap maybe, is a three-year venture (2008-11), the Hydra Project, being undertaken in partnership with colleagues at Stanford University, the University of Virginia and Fedora Commons

510. From Hydra to Samvera: An open source community journey
- Description:
- The Hydra Project started in 2008 through a partnership between the University of Hull, the University of Virginia, Stanford University and Fedora Commons (now DuraSpace) to create tools that support use of the Fedora digital repository. Hull adopted the software outputs from this collaboration for its institutional repository in 2011 and remains an active Partner in the community, serving on the Steering Group and fostering development of the community and software in the UK and mainland Europe and The community now has 35 formal Partners and over 70 known adopters internationally. In June 2017 Hydra changed its name to Samvera, Icelandic for 'being together', to recognize the value gained from multiple institutions working together to create the underlying common basis upon which multiple different repository solutions have been implemented. Samvera can be adopted through a set of tools to develop your own repository (using a package called Hyrax as the starting point) and is also available as a complete repository solution, hosted or local, through the use of Hyku. The community has been at the heart of making Samvera a success, and will continue to underpin its future direction.

512. Towards a repository-enabled scholar's workbench: RepoMMan, REMAP and Hydra
- Description:
- Between April 2005 and March 2009, the e-Services Integration Group at the University of Hull undertook two Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC)-funded projects, RepoMMan and REMAP. The RepoMMan tool developed a browser-based interface through which a user could interact with a private digital repository space to support the development of their works-in-progress. It went on to look at the processes involved in publishing such works to a public-facing repository and to investigate the possibility of generating metadata for the published object automatically. The follow-on REMAP Project implemented the publishing process and also investigated how triggers might be embedded in the objects that were created that would help with management and possible preservation of the object over time. The work of RepoMMan and REMAP has now been taken up in an international collaboration, the Hydra Project, which seeks to develop a repository-enabled "Scholars' Workbench". This will be a highly flexible system that will provide a search and discovery interface for a Fedora repository and that can be configured to provide interactive workflows around it for pre-publication development of materials and their post-publication management.

517. Building the Hydra Together: Enhancing Repository Provision through Multi-Institution Collaboration
- Description:
- • No single institution can resource the development of a full range of digital content management solutions on its own, …yet each needs the flexibility to tailor solutions to local demands and workflows. • No single system can provide the full range of repository‐based solutions for a given institution’s needs, *…yet sustainable solutions require a common repository infrastructure The Hydra project has tested out these assumptions and reports in this presentation the outcomes from applying them to the work undertaken. The paper was delivered as a 'Prezi' presentation which can be found by following the 'Related URL' link below., The proposal for this presentation at the Open Repositories conference in 2011 begins, and The Hydra project is a digital repository initiative started in 2008 that originally brought together three institutions (Stanford University, the University of Virginia and the University of Hull) and DuraSpace, with a common identified need to provide a flexible means for managing and delivering a wide range of digital content types. The project has since investigated and worked towards a reusable framework for multipurpose, multifunction, multi‐institutional repository‐enabled solutions. Two previously identified assumptions have underpinned the work

519. Hydra: A Technical and Community Framework For Customized, Shared Repository Applications
- Description:
- A presentation given at the Open Repositories conference in 2010. In part, the proposal reads and While repositories provide obvious benefits in hosting and managing content, it is equally clear that there is no “one size fits all” solution to the range of digital asset management needs at a typical institution, much less across institutions. A system that supports the submission, approval and dissemination of electronic theses and dissertations, for example, has demonstrably different requirements than a digitization workflow solution, an e-science data repository, or media preservation and access system. There is a clear need in the repository community to readily develop and deploy content-, domain-, and institution-specific solutions that integrate the flexibility and richness of customized applications and workflows with the underlying power of repositories for content management, access and preservation. This paper will provide an overview of Hydra’s philosophy, architecture, and components, as well as demonstrations of various Hydra installations. The paper will also provide a progress report on Hydra development to date and its overall roadmap, as well as provide observations on the successes and challenges of community-based development of shared repository solutions.

520. Designing & Building a Reusable Framework for Multipurpose, Multifunction, Multi-institutional Repository-Powered Solutions
- Description:
- A presentation given at the Open Repositories conference in 2009. Part of the proposal reads and Repositories have proven themselves as powerful tools for managing digital content in many different contexts. But experience has also shown that there are real, practical limits in trying to extend a single repository solution to meet the manifold needs of most institutions for their full range of digital content and use cases. Relatively narrow and inflexible application front ends can be used to create single-purpose repository-powered solutions, but they do not lend themselves to being quickly and easily repurposed to meet variations in content type or user interactions. There is a clear business need for a flexible, reusable application framework that can support the rapid development of multiple systems tailored to distinct needs, but powered by a common underlying repository. Recognizing this common need, Stanford University, the University of Hull and the University of Virginia are collaborating on “Project Hydra”, a three-year effort to create an application and middleware framework that, in combination with an underlying Fedora repository, will create a reusable environment for running multifunction, multipurpose repository-powered solutions. This presentation will provide demonstrations of the work done to date, including of the prototype ETD application, as well as the set of content models and disseminators that the project has defined so far. The presentation will also present links to the project’s publicly accessible documentation and open source code, as well as solicit the constructive input from community members who may be interested in the project or its outcomes.

521. Facing the Hydra alone: Three case studies
- Description:
- A presentation at the Open Repositories conference in 2014. There are those who perceive that implementing, running and maintaining a Fedora-based digital repository is a daunting task suited only to institutions with a significant team of developers and support staff. This paper offers a different perspective. The University of Hull in the UK, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio, and the Chinese Historical Society of Southern California (CHSSC) provide three case studies of Hydra-based repositories that are centred on a single developer working with small, limited or no support. This talk will compare and contrast their experiences and explain why the developers concerned feel that creating and maintaining these successful repositories has been worth their time and effort.

533. Fedora 6.0 and the Oxford Common File Layout
- Description:
- A lightning talk at Samvera Virtual Connect 2019 described thus and For the past several years the Fedora community has prioritized alignment with linked data best practices and modern web standards. We are now shifting our attention back to Fedora's digital preservation roots with a focus on the Oxford Common File Layout (OCFL). The OFCL is an application-independent approach to the storage of digital objects in a structured, transparent, and predictable manner. Fedora 6.0, the next major release, will replace the current ModeShape backend with a more scalable and performant implementation that persists data in accordance with the OCFL specification. This presentation will provide an overview of the Fedora 6.0 design, including an introduction to the OCFL and how it will be implemented. It will be of interest to Samvera community members who want to track Fedora developments and understand their impact on Samvera applications.

534. Making Hyrax more inclusive through controlled vocabulary choice
- Description:
- A lightning talk at Samvera Virtual Connect 2019 described thus and What if the Hyrax web application were to support and include, by default, controlled vocabularies from marginalized communities? Currently Hyrax supplies a default set of descriptive metadata fields for describing uploaded objects. This set of fields includes Keyword (a required field) and Subject (an optional field). Neither of these fields are controlled by a vocabulary of terms upon install. The Questioning Authority (QA) gem exists as an option to configure and apply controlled vocabularies for use with fields such as these in Hyrax. While QA can be configured to work with nearly any vocabulary, the current vocabularies offered through the gem when it is installed include LCSH/NAF/GFT/MPT/DGT, FAST, Geonames, MeSH, Agrovoc, DBPedia, NALT, and Getty (AAT, TGN, ULAN). These are widely used mainstream sources for topical subject and genre description but also tend to reflect the current dominant mainstream power structure in the United States (white, male, straight, able-bodied, middle-class, Christian, Anglo). Should we increase the list of vocabularies available, by default, in the QA gem? Should we go beyond that and enable vocabulary choices on the default Subject and Keyword Hyrax fields? This lightning talk will discuss these questions and consider vocabulary options that would provide more inclusive descriptive capabilities.

544. New Directions for Northwestern: Taking a Cloud-First Approach
- Description:
- Northwestern University Libraries is currently running Samvera applications in production. Three of these are developed, maintained, and managed by the Repository & Digital Curation workgroup, * Arch, an Institutional Repository, based on Hyrax 2.4.1 * AVR, Northwestern's audiovisual repository, based on Avalon 6.3 * DONUT, the staff-facing ingest interface for the digital object repository, based on Hyrax 2.4.1 In developing and deploying these applications, we have encountered (and mostly overcome) numerous stumbling blocks relating to performance, scalability, customization, and assumptions about the deployment environment and infrastructure on which the apps will run. While we have found it possible to shoehorn the Samvera stack (as it exists today) into our Amazon Web Services cloud-based deployment environment, we have also started to investigate the rewards and compromises involved in taking a cloud-first approach to our next generation of tools. We have identified several basic tenets for this approach so far, * If AWS offers a native Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solution for a particular problem, use it (e.g., choose ElasticSearch/Cloud Search over Solr) * Avoid virtual server instances that run 24x7 waiting for requests/work * Do not assume there is a local filesystem to work with * Optimize startup time so that units of work can be spawned and killed as needed * Constantly assess and reassess every unit of work for scalability, repeatability, and idempotence * Keep data portable and code adaptable, but don't over-stress about vendor lock-in In this presentation, members of the Repository Development & Administration Team will present on lessons learned from 7 years of working with Samvera, Avalon, and Hyrax, what the future holds for our next round of in-house development, and the opportunities & compromises our cloud-first approach creates regarding our use of and contributions to the larger Samvera community., and A presentation at Samvera Virtual Connect 2019 described thus

550. Valkyrie: reimagining the Samvera Community
- Description:
- Valkyrie is a new persistence layer for Samvera, designed to address performance and sustainability problems. It was developed through the existing Samvera Working Group process, showing that the current Samvera community governance structure can be used to tackle big problems. Valkyrie features pluggable persistence options, allowing Samvera applications to use not just the historical combination of Fedora and Solr, but also other options like Fedora or Solr by themselves, PostgreSQL, and local disk. Allowing Samvera applications to use different persistence options refocuses the Samvera community, shifting away from persistence in Fedora as the defining aspect of the community. Instead, the focus shifts to the shared tools built by the community. and A presentation at Samvera Virtual Connect 2018 described thus

576. Samvera and Fedora 4 Performance
- Description:
- A presentation given at Connect 2017 described thus and In this presentation, we present Fedora 4’s performance in different use cases. These use cases are the most general use cases that were developed by the Fedora 4 performance team. We compare the performance between different versions of Fedora 4 and demonstrate the improvement between these versions. We will also describe the procedures of these performance experiments and demonstrate the software we use (Ansible, AWS, and JMeter). Our performance experiments are conducted in the AWS ecosystem, and we use an R graph tool to visualize the JMeter result. With the AWS grant, we can do many different performance experiments in many scales. Moreover, it is easy to repeat and verify the performance results using AWS. The Fedora 4 performance team wants to know more about the Samvera community’s interests related to the Fedora 4 performance. We plan to gather more use cases from the Samvera community, including middleware such as Solr, Camel, and Fuseki, etc. We can investigate, explore issues, and continue enhancing the future of Fedora 4.

579. Metadata Management and Batch Ingest Automation
- Description:
- A presentation given at Connect 2017 described thus, it’s not fun to have an ingest fail overnight and spend the morning tracking down why. Programmatically testing and validating digital object metadata prior to ingest helps us avoid these failures. The metadata itself is managed by Git and stored in GitHub, Several years ago UCSB incorporated Git/GitHub and JIRA into our metadata management and batch ingest workflows. Since then we’ve looked at repurposing other development tools to provide lightweight and automated solutions to problems we often face. One is that we rely primarily on batch ingests when adding content to our Samvera repository. As a result it’s especially important for the metadata to be error-free, and this allows us to run automated checks against any changes using Jenkins and some custom libraries we’ve written for validating CSV and MODS metadata. In this session, we will provide an overall of our current ingest preparation workflow and the tools we are using, and will discuss some of the benefits that have come out of this collaborative effort.

586. Community models and authorities for Hyrax applications
- Description:
- A presentation given at Connect 2017 described thus and Presentation on a gem for Hyrax models and authorities, which provides a central place for creating models for different types of works. Each new model draws on a central pot of properties to declare the set of properties needed to fully describe the particular work. The gem already exists and has sample models for journal article, thesis and more. In this presentation we will work through the process of defining a new model and then using that model in a Hyrax application. The idea behind the gem is to make it easier for developers to deploy new models, and provide a place for metadata folks to jointly define re-usable models.
