How can we include user experience [UX] best practices in Hydra's core development work? How can UX experts contribute effectively to the Hydra project? How can we ensure that decisions around elements that affect the user experience are based on good evidence? Through case studies and facilitated discussion, this panel will seek to demonstrate and explore how to better integrate end-user feedback into the Hydra development stream. Dave McCallum from the University of Oregon explores issues of accessibility and the user experience. Jenn Colt from Cornell University and Sonya Betz from the University of Alberta will facilitate an active discussion around building UX into Hydra development workflows, and will ask participants to suggest strategies for including real users and their feedback in design and development decisions. Called “Ichabod,” this tool has allowed us to ingest, normalize, and enrich metadata from diverse systems of record and make it consumable by our main discovery tool, which is powered by the Ex-Libris product Primo. We developed Ichabod using the Agile methodology and involving developers from three distinct NYU Libraries groups. The software will lay the groundwork for future innovation in the areas of metadata management and discovery for repository content. The relationships we established have already made it possible for a similar collaboration arrangement on two other projects, with more to come in the future., and From DSpace to Drupal, NYU has a variety of systems to ingest and display curated digital content. As part of the Mellon-funded AIMS project, the Universities of Virginia, Hull, Stanford and Yale have spent the last two years exploring the ramifications and distinct requirements of born digital archival materials in libraries. This presentation focuses on the partners’ research and prototyping of tools, infrastructure and workflows necessary to provide an end-to-end environment for born digital archival materials.
A presentation given at the Open Repositories conference in 2010. In part, the proposal reads and While repositories provide obvious benefits in hosting and managing content, it is equally clear that there is no “one size fits all” solution to the range of digital asset management needs at a typical institution, much less across institutions. A system that supports the submission, approval and dissemination of electronic theses and dissertations, for example, has demonstrably different requirements than a digitization workflow solution, an e-science data repository, or media preservation and access system. There is a clear need in the repository community to readily develop and deploy content-, domain-, and institution-specific solutions that integrate the flexibility and richness of customized applications and workflows with the underlying power of repositories for content management, access and preservation. This paper will provide an overview of Hydra’s philosophy, architecture, and components, as well as demonstrations of various Hydra installations. The paper will also provide a progress report on Hydra development to date and its overall roadmap, as well as provide observations on the successes and challenges of community-based development of shared repository solutions.
A presentation given at the Open Repositories conference in 2009. Part of the proposal reads and Repositories have proven themselves as powerful tools for managing digital content in many different contexts. But experience has also shown that there are real, practical limits in trying to extend a single repository solution to meet the manifold needs of most institutions for their full range of digital content and use cases. Relatively narrow and inflexible application front ends can be used to create single-purpose repository-powered solutions, but they do not lend themselves to being quickly and easily repurposed to meet variations in content type or user interactions. There is a clear business need for a flexible, reusable application framework that can support the rapid development of multiple systems tailored to distinct needs, but powered by a common underlying repository. Recognizing this common need, Stanford University, the University of Hull and the University of Virginia are collaborating on “Project Hydra”, a three-year effort to create an application and middleware framework that, in combination with an underlying Fedora repository, will create a reusable environment for running multifunction, multipurpose repository-powered solutions. This presentation will provide demonstrations of the work done to date, including of the prototype ETD application, as well as the set of content models and disseminators that the project has defined so far. The presentation will also present links to the project’s publicly accessible documentation and open source code, as well as solicit the constructive input from community members who may be interested in the project or its outcomes.

Using Hydra to manage and present cultural heritage resources raises a set of interesting challenges that are beyond the scope of the traditional institutional repository. These include more complex data models, elaborate and varied workflows, richer descriptive metadata, support for more and varied controlled vocabularies, the requirement to manage larger objects comprised of larger files and multiple derivatives, support for IIIF, and a desire for richer viewing environments in general. A presentation at Hydra Connect 2016 described thus, In this presentation, we will present a software development and deployment process that we have developed at Virginia Tech. We have used this procedure to develop several Hydra projects for University Libraries services at Virginia Tech and have also used it to conduct interviews for Ruby and Rails developers. We implemented a central vagrant box to facilitate the development and deployment processes. Using this vagrant box gives us many benefits, and 1. Code immediately. Our software engineers can focus on coding without worrying about software installation. 2. Unified development environment. All developers do their work in the same, consistent development environment. 3. Development of multiple projects simultaneously. Developers can work on multiple projects in parallel, switching between project environments in just a few minutes. 4. Minimal differences between development environments and production environment. After we finish implementation, we can quickly deploy our applications into a cloud environment (e.g. AWS and OpenStack) that is highly consistent with our development environments. We will present and demonstrate our hands-on experience on how we use a single vagrant box with different GitHub repositories to develop multiple Hydra applications in detail, including Sufia, GeoBlacklight, Fedora, Solr, Vagrant, AWS, and OpenStack. Archiving Research Data into Hydra through the Open Science Framework (OSF) - A look at initial work of Notre Dame and Johns Hopkins to archive research projects from the OSF into Fedora and Hydra repositories, and first implementation of a Fedora Research Object Model. This plugs into a service offering of the Center for for Open Science, OSF for Institutions (OSF4I). ND/JHU version will be initial support for OSF Fedora Archiving Add-on in the OSF as part of OSF4I offering. We hope to start discussion around next steps for other Hydra institutions to use this along with OSF4I to allow them support to archive research data from the OSF into their own Hydra/Fedora repository. In the UK, the Universities of York and Hull are looking at Archivematica's place in a research data pipeline. The two universities have slightly different use cases but share the desire to put research (and likely other) content through Archivematica on its way to the repository thus giving us a solid base for long-term preservation. We are both now in the third phase of a joint project to build proof-of-concepts to illustrate how Hydra and Archivematica can work together to manage and preserve research data. Since our project began, Jisc have launched an ambitious UK national research data shared service where a range of suppliers offer systems in different lots. Both Hydra / Fedora and Islandora / Fedora are part of the the ‘research repository’ lot of the service and the work of York and Hull has heavily informed the ‘preservation’ lot, with Archivematica one of the systems on offer. Advancing Hyku, funded by Arcadia, a charitable fund of Lisbet Rausing and Peter Baldwin Shared Research Repository, hosted by British Library Hyku for Consortia, funded by Institute of Museum and Library Services and Leads from Hyku projects in various stages (active implementation, nearing launch, and ramping up) gathered for a lively panel session at Samvera Connect 2021. We started with brief updates on work done this past year across our projects on prioritizing community features. Included were discussion about what works in local installations, what works (and doesn’t) when contributing code back to the community core, and how we collaborate across projects in formal (shared Hyku Roadmap, meetings, documentation) and informal (Slack, email, telepathy?!?) ways. Between 2018 and 2019, Jisc funded an effort to refresh the SWORD repository deposit protocol, with modern repository use cases in mind, especially around data repositories. As a result we produced a draft specification, extensively reviewed by a large number of the repositories community, including those from the Samvera and Fedora communities. In 2019, NII provided funding to produce a reference implementation, and we have been working to prove that the specification is implementable and viable. That work concluded in July 2020 with the release of a client library and a server library in Python. Now the SWORDv3 team is looking outward to the rest of the repositories community, looking to engage them in development for their platforms, and to enable novel integrations. This presentation will introduce the spec for those that are not familiar, and describe the technical and community-building work that is ongoing, and call for engagement by the Samvera technical community in working with SWORDv3. The Emory Libraries implemented a second-generation preservation infrastructure in 2019 utilizing Hyrax 3, Fedora 4 and AWS, following a requirements gathering phase that included developing a preservation policy and a review of preservation community best practices. The Samvera Branch Renaming Working Group formed in August 2020 to create a recommendation, plan, and timeline for our community to stop using long-practiced "master/slave" coding jargon that perpetuates racist systems and language, and instead embrace and implement positive change, leading by example. Our Samvera-based institutional repository is nearing eight years old, and one can safely say it is middle aged-- and with middle age comes a mid-life crisis. Over the course of the past year, the current product owners have examined the role and vision of the repository and embraced the role of maintainers, advocating for critical external needs. Balancing the technical needs and costs of an aging system while providing new services to meet user needs with a limited technical staff has required being realistic about both available resources and institutional priorities. In this talk, we will discuss our experiences, our methods for refining the focus of a large project, focusing developer work to yield maximum payoffs, and centering the repository to be more useful to the campus community by meeting users where they are. A presentation given at Samvera Connect 2020 On-line described thus and Collaboration is more than just sharing costs, and the PALCI and PALNI consortia are pushing that idea into our repository management. We want to create the flexibility for both IR workflows and more “traditional” library-owned content within the same instance of Hyku. We also want to enable libraries to collaborate and share work, not just with their consortial partners, but also among their own departments across campus. To us, this means enhancing the ability to manage user and tenant settings to enable different workflows. By working with a number of libraries testing out the Hyku multi-tenant option, we realized that a robust dashboard for user/role assignment and the expansion of a few more roles would enable us to manage these flexible workflow options. PALNI and PALCI are working with Notch 8 to enhance the underlying “role” and “group” functionality in Hyku and develop a new administrative dashboard to control permissions across multiple tenants. We will also be expanding role and group functions within tenant management. This presentation will discuss how we researched and developed our requirements as well as the plan and progress to date. A presentation given at Samvera Connect 2020 On-line described thus, Advancing Hyku Project aims to support the growth of open access through institutional repositories by introducing significant structural improvements and new features to the Samvera Community’s Hyku Institutional Repository. Features include full metrics and altmetrics, ORCiD profile sync, auto-population, in-browser viewing and annotation, and pathways to long-term preservation. The project partners are University of Virginia Library, Ubiquity Press and the British Library, with funding from Arcadia, a charitable fund of philanthropists Lisbet Rausing and Peter Baldwin. The project began October 2019 and is scheduled to conclude by August 2021. This presentation will provide an update on the project which is coming to an end of its first year. Presenters will introduce the developments made so far, architectural review for structural improvements for the Hyku framework, collaborations to strengthen the project deliverables and the forthcoming plans for the coming year. A presentation given at Samvera Connect 2020 On-line described thus and After trying to navigate deployment, configuration, performance, and scaling issues of several different image servers and support infrastructure (Cantaloupe, Aware, Riiif, nginx, and SquidCache, to name a few), we decided to see if we could build something less general/configurable but far more suited to our use case and runtime environment. serverless-iiif started out as a bare bones, proof-of-concept demonstration of how a scalable, high-performance IIIF image server could be implemented in a small, inexpensive AWS Lambda function. Just over a year later, the project serves as the basis for high-volume IIIF services running in production at Northwestern University, Princeton University, the University of Notre Dame, and the Royal Pavilion & Museums, Brighton & Hove. This presentation will cover the project from its beginnings (as a small demo repository carved out of Northwestern's cloud repository infrastructure), through a number of forks, merges, performance enhancements, deployment improvements, and into production. In May 2018, UNC Libraries purchased a report from 1Science which listed 47,000 articles authored by UNC researchers. Although the vendor characterized the report as an out-of-the-box tool designed to fill an institutional repository, we found that it would take significant work to make it usable for UNC’s Hyrax-based institutional repository, the Carolina Digital Repository (CDR). In this presentation, we will discuss the issues that we identified, including scripting errors, inconsistent metadata and rights concerns. We will describe the plans and processes to fix these issues and to adapt the metadata for our repository. Additionally, we will address best practices for uploads and future plans. one size would not fit all for our campus archives, library, and museum, and community needs above all. In this presentation, team members will talk about the past two years of experimentation, development, and conversation around how to connect our community to our cultural heritage collections through multiple integrations, both human and technological. At a high-level, we’ll discuss our technical architecture that uses legacy applications like ArchivesSpace, an aging Fedora repository, and a decades-old museum database together with the IIIF framework and open-source GatsbyJS. And perhaps more importantly, we’ll outline the cross-departmental team structure that has developers talking to museum curators, library cataloguers, archivists, and everyone in between. A presentation given at Samvera Connect 2020 On-line described thus and Princeton University Library’s digital projects and initiatives were seriously disrupted by COVID-19. Digitization of materials for projects and forthcoming exhibitions came to an unexpected halt at the same time as patrons and staff were separated from physical objects and library spaces. Necessity, however, provided an opportunity to reassess digital projects and how staff members interact with and contribute to our repository (Figgy). We focused on the creation of workflows and documentation for new contributors who would be working in the repository, helping them enhance existing digital objects with OCR, item level organization, structural metadata, page labeling, and IIIF display attributes. We describe how we were able to use Figgy and unexpectedly-available staff time to make more effective research tools and provide a better user experience for patrons and staff working with our digital collections. Such enhancements add immense value to our collections as well as to our applications, and the work can be done effectively by a wide range of staff from different departments with variable skill sets. Libraries, declared dead by some in a digital information environment, see their role now increasingly as provider of services for open research. Yet not all is as well as it seems. On the one hand, many institutions struggle to properly maintain their infrastructure and provide a good user experience. On the other hand, closed commercial services dazzle users but are a risk to transparency and openness. In this presentation I want to discuss some of the wider challenges I see for knowledge infrastructure services and talk about some relevant activities I am currently involved in – including the experiences of the British Library with using the Samvera-based Hyku solution for a shared repository service. The second part will give a general technical overview designed for a non-technical audience. The resources needed to maintain and contribute to a hosted or custom Samvera solution will be discussed, resources that exist to get started will be highlighted plus how to contribute to the community technically and non-technically. The final part will discuss value and how to pitch Samvera and get institutional support. It will discuss the advantages of being part of the community and how that strengthens the sustainability of the tools, the applications, and the community overall. It describes a collaboration between George Washington University and the New York Times to make available administrative documents discovered after the Islamic State withdrew from Mosul in Iraq. The collaboration is using using a Hyrax-based repository. A team at Duke University Libraries refactored the Duke Digital Repository software stack, replacing Fedora 3 with the Valkyrie gem. The project kicked off in November of 2018, and concluded with the rollout of DDR 2.0.0 in January of 2020. The University of Hull has been partnering with CoSector to develop and implement a digital preservation infrastructure for the management of a digital archive for the UK City of Culture 2017. The infrastructure is based on a combination of systems that do they do best, with Hyrax and Archivematica central to the overall workflow. Following development in 2019, this talk provides an update on implementation of the infrastructure and reports on the lessons learned from turning an idea into practical reality. Modern javascript frameworks like React and Vue facilitate building dynamic, rich user interfaces (like thematic sites or research tools). In this lightning talk, we'll show how we each built search components using these frameworks which use the Blacklight API but not the Blacklight UI. We'll also discuss how these components are being utilized and possibilities for making shared community javascript components. Fedora 6, the next major version of Fedora, will focus on digital preservation by aligning with the Oxford Common File Layout (OCFL). The OFCL is an application-independent approach to the storage of digital objects in a structured, transparent, and predictable manner. This provides many benefits, including, storage diversity, to ensure content can be stored on diverse storage infrastructures including cloud object stores, parsability, both by humans and machines, to ensure content can be understood in the absence of original software, robustness against errors, corruption, and migration between storage technologies, versioning, so repositories can make changes to objects allowing its history to persist, and and completeness, so that a repository can be rebuilt from the files it stores. This presentation will provide an overview of the Fedora 6 design, including a brief introduction to the OCFL and how it is being implemented, along with a summary of development progress to date and the anticipated timeline for the 6.0 release. A major advantage of open source repositories is that search results and relevancy ranking can be tuned to our specific collections, as well as our users’ needs. This lightning talk will explore how users, developers, and catalogers collaborate to create shared meaning in the form of search results and relevancy ranking, and will discuss what types of interventions can be made in that meaning-making process to allow user needs and search results to be more closely aligned. Using Sufia 7 as a reference model, what does the path for depositing a new item into a Hydra/PCDM based repository look like from an end-user, code, console, solr, and fedora perspective, A presentation given at Hydra Connect 2016 described thus, show the upload of new digital content via the Sufia UI and show each step of the data flow in the Browser, rails console, and Fedora. Walk through derivative generation and show the various PCDM relationships being built at each stage. Then add a new user collection, and walk through the same flows as a work is added to a collection, and what gems are in play, what does the data look like from a ruby developer perspective, what is persisted in Fedora and Solr - how does it all relate to PCDM? Migrating a Fedora 3-based Hydra repository to Fedora 4 can be a major undertaking. This panel will bring together representatives from multiple institutions that either are planning for, are in the midst of, or have completed such a migration. Depending on where they are in the migration process, panelists will talk about their plans for migration, techniques used or expected to be used, obstacles anticipated or encountered, how problems were addressed, and migration outcomes. Follow-up to last year's presentation about Columbia's Hyacinth editor. Lots of changes / progress since the last presentation. Many TODOs have been TODONE. Hyacinth is a metadata editor, batch Fedora ingest tool and content publishing application that is becoming more and more integrated into our digitization, cataloging and front-end presentation workflows. Built on top of Hydra, but not Blacklight, with a JavaScript-and-AJAX-heavy front-end for many search/editing features. Currently Fedora 3, but hopefully moving toward Fedora 4 early next year. Still under development with additional planned features. I'd love to present and get feedback.
