13. Bridge2Hyku: Tools and Strategies for Content Migration to Open Source Repository - Hyku

Description:
A presentation at the Open Repositories conference held in Hamburg, Germany, during 2019, described thus and The University of Houston (UH) Libraries, in partnership and consultation with numerous institutions, was awarded an IMLS National Leadership/Project Grant to support the creation of the Bridge2Hyku (B2H) Toolkit. Contents migration from proprietary systems to open source repositories remains a barrier for many institutions due to lack of tools, tutorials, and documentation. The B2H Toolkit, which includes migration strategies and use cases as well as tools for transitioning from CONTENTdm to Hyku, acts as a comprehensive resource to facilitate the repository migration process. This presentation will start with background information on the ecosystems, workflows, and tools, collectively known as the Bayou City Digital Asset Management System (BCDAMS), implemented at the UH Libraries. The presenters will then move to the key phases that make up the IMLS funded B2H Toolkit project plan. The presenters will also discuss how the project engages and strengthens the open source Samvera Community (formerly Hydra Community) around Hyku by leveraging our collective expertise through strategic collaboration. They will finally discuss sustainability and promotion of the B2H toolkit.

Hyrax, now with around 50 active repositories, Samvera is an open source repository system with a growing user base. Since launch, two Samvera flavours have emerged, The Samvera Hyku system, focusing on how it's being developed to meet expectations of the British Library’s project The successes and challenges for the Library, our users and partners of developing a shared repository service. The workshop aims to be useful for both business/repository managers and repository system colleagues. Multi-tenancy is a key feature, exclusive to Hyku among Samvera repository solutions. It means that with one instance of the software, multiple discrete branded repositories can exist. They are individual from the public-facing side, but can be managed from a super-admin layer in Hyku. In this video, Amanda Hurford from PALNI demonstrates new repository creation from the super-admin level. PALNI and PALCI's Hyku for Consortia provides an excellent use case for this feature, allowing member libraries to manage their own repositories within a single instance of Hyku. A presentation at Samvera Connect 2020 described thus and With the breakthrough of the open science and research information management agenda repositories appear to have succeeded. Libraries, declared dead by some in a digital information environment, see their role now increasingly as provider of services for open research. Yet not all is as well as it seems. On the one hand, many institutions struggle to properly maintain their infrastructure and provide a good user experience. On the other hand, closed commercial services dazzle users but are a risk to transparency and openness. 26. Supporting collaboration in Hyku: Workflows, tools, and design

A presentation given at Samvera Connect 2020 On-line described thus and Collaboration is more than just sharing costs, and the PALCI and PALNI consortia are pushing that idea into our repository management. We want to create the flexibility for both IR workflows and more “traditional” library-owned content within the same instance of Hyku. We also want to enable libraries to collaborate and share work, not just with their consortial partners, but also among their own departments across campus. To us, this means enhancing the ability to manage user and tenant settings to enable different workflows. By working with a number of libraries testing out the Hyku multi-tenant option, we realized that a robust dashboard for user/role assignment and the expansion of a few more roles would enable us to manage these flexible workflow options. PALNI and PALCI are working with Notch 8 to enhance the underlying “role” and “group” functionality in Hyku and develop a new administrative dashboard to control permissions across multiple tenants. We will also be expanding role and group functions within tenant management. This presentation will discuss how we researched and developed our requirements as well as the plan and progress to date. A presentation given at Samvera Connect 2020 On-line described thus, Advancing Hyku Project aims to support the growth of open access through institutional repositories by introducing significant structural improvements and new features to the Samvera Community’s Hyku Institutional Repository. Features include full metrics and altmetrics, ORCiD profile sync, auto-population, in-browser viewing and annotation, and pathways to long-term preservation. The project partners are University of Virginia Library, Ubiquity Press and the British Library, with funding from Arcadia, a charitable fund of philanthropists Lisbet Rausing and Peter Baldwin. The project began October 2019 and is scheduled to conclude by August 2021. This presentation will provide an update on the project which is coming to an end of its first year. 31. Samvera Connect 2021--Hyku Projects Panel: In the Community and In the Wild

Description:
Advancing Hyku, funded by Arcadia, a charitable fund of Lisbet Rausing and Peter Baldwin Shared Research Repository, hosted by British Library Hyku for Consortia, funded by Institute of Museum and Library Services and Leads from Hyku projects in various stages (active implementation, nearing launch, and ramping up) gathered for a lively panel session at Samvera Connect 2021. We started with brief updates on work done this past year across our projects on prioritizing community features. Included were discussion about what works in local installations, what works (and doesn’t) when contributing code back to the community core, and how we collaborate across projects in formal (shared Hyku Roadmap, meetings, documentation) and informal (Slack, email, telepathy?!?) ways. 38. Bridge2Hyku: Workshop

Description:
The University of Houston (UH) Libraries, in partnership and consultation with numerous institutions, was awarded an IMLS National Leadership/Project Grant (LG-70-17-0217-17) to support the creation of the Bridge2Hyku (B2H) Toolkit. As part of this toolkit, University of Houston is developing several applications to assist in the migration of data from CONTENTdm to Hyku. The workshop will cover two important tools, a importer gem that would allow Hyku providers an easy insert into their stack for users to migrate with. This workshop will have attendees work with these applications and the B2H Toolkit to cover the basics in metadata migration. Learn how to use CDM Bridge to get your data out of CONTENTdm, allowing you to assess, reconcile and prepare your data for Hyku. See how using HyBridge can ingest your data into Hyku and learn how to evaluate that data in its new home., A workshop given at Samvera Connect 2018, advertized as "Hands-on with the Bridge2Hyku Toolkit", described thus, a stand alone electron-based tool that easily pulls metadata and files out of any CONTENTdm instance for migration and metadata remediation. Federal law requires a standard of accessibility on any project that receives federal funds. Creating accessible applications is also socially responsible, and implementing these practices can help us set better expectations as community leaders. In a community dedicated to preservation and providing access to to a broad range of assets, accessibility standards should be a priority. We'll explain audits and certification levels, as well as accessibility features that could provide significant value to digital repositories. 43. Consortial Hyku for Open Educational Resources

Description:
This presentation will explore the development of Hyku for Open Educational Resources — openly licensed educational materials such as textbooks, quizzes, classroom activities, etc. — while capitalizing on Hyku's multi-tenancy and sharing of infrastructure across two large groups of libraries. The PALCI and PALNI consortia (representing libraries in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, West Virginia and Indiana) have just received a two year IMLS National Leadership Grant to develop Hyku into a multi-tenant, consortia-based service capable of handling OER in addition to other institutional repository resource types. In addition to leveraging collective expertise through consortia, two new work types are being developed for OER and electronic thesis and dissertations.
