11. Fedora 6.0 and the Oxford Common File Layout
- Description:
- A lightning talk at Samvera Virtual Connect 2019 described thus and For the past several years the Fedora community has prioritized alignment with linked data best practices and modern web standards. We are now shifting our attention back to Fedora's digital preservation roots with a focus on the Oxford Common File Layout (OCFL). The OFCL is an application-independent approach to the storage of digital objects in a structured, transparent, and predictable manner. Fedora 6.0, the next major release, will replace the current ModeShape backend with a more scalable and performant implementation that persists data in accordance with the OCFL specification. This presentation will provide an overview of the Fedora 6.0 design, including an introduction to the OCFL and how it will be implemented. It will be of interest to Samvera community members who want to track Fedora developments and understand their impact on Samvera applications.

20. Avalon Media System: Community Implementation and Sustainability
- Description:
- Indiana University and Northwestern University, in collaboration with nine partner institutions, recently completed the last year of a three-year IMLS-funded effort to build the Avalon Media System, an open source solution for managing and providing access to digital audio and video collections, based on Fedora and the Hydra repository software development framework. As the Avalon platform reaches maturity, several institutions are in the process of implementing Avalon both to replace current time-based media access solutions and to support new use cases. In addition, new funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation will support continued work to develop new features, grow and provide support for the community of adopters, and move Avalon towards organizational and financial sustainability. This panel will bring together project leaders from Indiana and Northwestern, along with Avalon community members at the University of Virginia and Stanford University, to share experiences of implementing Avalon at their institutions, integrating Avalon with other local systems, and supporting Avalon to enable a variety of use cases in research, teaching, and learning. Panel members will also discuss future development plans and provide a preview of how the project intends to transition from a grant-supported endeavor to a community-sustained solution. and Slides for a panel presentation given at the Open Repositories conference in 2015 held in Indianapolis described thus

21. Capturing the UK City of Culture: bringing Hyrax and Archivematica together to deliver preservation and access workflows
- Description:
- over 150,000 items in total. The University of Hull is contributing to the long-term legacy of the year through the development of a digital archive to capture, record and make available the material generated. This has been undertaken through the combination of a repository, using Samvera’s Hyrax, with related tools, A presentation at the Open Repositories 2019 conference in Hamburg, Germany, described thus, Hull in the UK was awarded the title of UK City of Culture for 2017. Over 2,800 events, attracting a total of 5.3 million people, took place over the course the year, a vast cultural undertaking. This cultural celebration generated many digital, and physical, artefacts, from the business documents of the organising company through to models of works by artists and data from evaluation of the impact of the year, and Archivematica for preservation processing, Box as an interim store, CALM for archives cataloguing, and Blacklight for presentation and discovery – each doing what they do best and being combined to best overall effect. This presentation will describe the work to create this infrastructure in partnership with a repository vendor, CoSector, and consider the ways in which the architecture, now completed, can be applied to other use cases, both archival and repository-related, beyond the specific one for which it was built.

22. Enhanced Preservation, Fewer Migrations: Fedora 6 and the Oxford Common File Layout
- Description:
- Fedora 6, the next major version of Fedora, will focus on digital preservation by aligning with the Oxford Common File Layout (OCFL). The OFCL is an application-independent approach to the storage of digital objects in a structured, transparent, and predictable manner. This provides many benefits, including, storage diversity, to ensure content can be stored on diverse storage infrastructures including cloud object stores, parsability, both by humans and machines, to ensure content can be understood in the absence of original software, robustness against errors, corruption, and migration between storage technologies, versioning, so repositories can make changes to objects allowing its history to persist, and and completeness, so that a repository can be rebuilt from the files it stores. This presentation will provide an overview of the Fedora 6 design, including a brief introduction to the OCFL and how it is being implemented, along with a summary of development progress to date and the anticipated timeline for the 6.0 release. 23. Hyrax and Archivematica: central to implementing digital preservation workflows
- Description:
- The University of Hull has been partnering with CoSector to develop and implement a digital preservation infrastructure for the management of a digital archive for the UK City of Culture 2017. The infrastructure is based on a combination of systems that do they do best, with Hyrax and Archivematica central to the overall workflow. Following development in 2019, this talk provides an update on implementation of the infrastructure and reports on the lessons learned from turning an idea into practical reality. 24. On the verge of success – or failure? Reflections on repositories and the wider library knowledge infrastructure (and a bit about Hyku).
- Description:
- A presentation at Samvera Connect 2020 described thus and With the breakthrough of the open science and research information management agenda repositories appear to have succeeded. Libraries, declared dead by some in a digital information environment, see their role now increasingly as provider of services for open research. Yet not all is as well as it seems. On the one hand, many institutions struggle to properly maintain their infrastructure and provide a good user experience. On the other hand, closed commercial services dazzle users but are a risk to transparency and openness. In this presentation I want to discuss some of the wider challenges I see for knowledge infrastructure services and talk about some relevant activities I am currently involved in – including the experiences of the British Library with using the Samvera-based Hyku solution for a shared repository service. 33. Hydra, research data and Archivematica
- Description:
- In the UK, the Universities of York and Hull are looking at Archivematica's place in a research data pipeline. The two universities have slightly different use cases but share the desire to put research (and likely other) content through Archivematica on its way to the repository thus giving us a solid base for long-term preservation. We are both now in the third phase of a joint project to build proof-of-concepts to illustrate how Hydra and Archivematica can work together to manage and preserve research data. Since our project began, Jisc have launched an ambitious UK national research data shared service where a range of suppliers offer systems in different lots. Both Hydra / Fedora and Islandora / Fedora are part of the the ‘research repository’ lot of the service and the work of York and Hull has heavily informed the ‘preservation’ lot, with Archivematica one of the systems on offer. This presentation will describe the proof-of-concept work done by Hull and York, and will provide an overview of the new Jisc service. An audio recording of the session is available for download below. and A presentation at Hydra Connect 2016 described thus

37. Archiving Hull City of Culture: linking Hyrax and Archivematica
- Description:
- This talk will present a project at the University of Hull, working with CoSector and Cottage Labs, to create a permanent digital archive of the Hull City of Culture. Hull was awarded UK City of Culture for 2017 and, throughout the year, generated a wealth of digital material documenting the events and activities celebrating the city, as well as archives from the organization and evaluation of the event. The University of Hull, already an active user of Samvera technologies, wanted to build on the work done for the Jisc ‘Filling the Digital Preservation Gap’ by using Archivematica for the digital archives preservation pipeline and Hyrax as a showcase for the City of Culture. We will also talk about how the project was originally conceived, and how that has changed through active and engaged project meetings to reflect ongoing service needs for the management of digital archives, of which the City of Culture archive forms a part. Integration with CALM (archives management solution ) and the existing Hull History Centre Blacklight catalogue (developed by DCE) is being explored to create a fully integrated digital archiving solution. 40. Sites of Memory, Acts of Erasure: On the Powers, Meanings and Limitations of the Historical Archive and Samvera Connect 2019 Keynote Address
- Description:
- 00., The Politics of Memory in a St. Louis Town House (University of Massachusetts Press, 2019), but also recent political events in St. Louis, probing the deeper motives and implications of heritage preservation. The 'related URL' shown is a video recording of the conference's morning proceedings. The keynote address starts at time index 25, A presentation at Samvera Connect 2019 described thus, and Historian Pierre Nora has argued that we are living in an archival age––one in which we seek nothing less than “complete conservation of the present” and “total preservation of the past.” The advent of digital media has aided this project, but also exposed its futility, and in turn compounded our archival obsession, which Nora reminds us is rooted in anxiety about the meaning of the present, a sense of alienation from our collective past, and broader fears of cultural––or human––annihilation. In “Sites of Memory, Acts of Erasure,” Heidi Aronson Kolk will explore the unusual potency of the well-preserved material archive, while challenging us to consider its dark twin––the site of erasure, forgetting and annihilation. Her presentation will engage subjects introduced in her book, Taking Possession
