28. Valkyrie: reimagining the Samvera Community

Description:
Valkyrie is a new persistence layer for Samvera, designed to address performance and sustainability problems. It was developed through the existing Samvera Working Group process, showing that the current Samvera community governance structure can be used to tackle big problems. Valkyrie features pluggable persistence options, allowing Samvera applications to use not just the historical combination of Fedora and Solr, but also other options like Fedora or Solr by themselves, PostgreSQL, and local disk. Allowing Samvera applications to use different persistence options refocuses the Samvera community, shifting away from persistence in Fedora as the defining aspect of the community. 40. Making Hyrax more inclusive through controlled vocabulary choice

Description:
A lightning talk at Samvera Virtual Connect 2019 described thus and What if the Hyrax web application were to support and include, by default, controlled vocabularies from marginalized communities? Currently Hyrax supplies a default set of descriptive metadata fields for describing uploaded objects. This set of fields includes Keyword (a required field) and Subject (an optional field). Neither of these fields are controlled by a vocabulary of terms upon install. The Questioning Authority (QA) gem exists as an option to configure and apply controlled vocabularies for use with fields such as these in Hyrax. While QA can be configured to work with nearly any vocabulary, the current vocabularies offered through the gem when it is installed include LCSH/NAF/GFT/MPT/DGT, FAST, Geonames, MeSH, Agrovoc, DBPedia, NALT, and Getty (AAT, TGN, ULAN). These are widely used mainstream sources for topical subject and genre description but also tend to reflect the current dominant mainstream power structure in the United States (white, male, straight, able-bodied, middle-class, Christian, Anglo). Should we increase the list of vocabularies available, by default, in the QA gem? Should we go beyond that and enable vocabulary choices on the default Subject and Keyword Hyrax fields? This lightning talk will discuss these questions and consider vocabulary options that would provide more inclusive descriptive capabilities.

We are now shifting our attention back to Fedora's digital preservation roots with a focus on the Oxford Common File Layout (OCFL). The OFCL is an application-independent approach to the storage of digital objects in a structured, transparent, and predictable manner. Fedora 6.0, the next major release, will replace the current ModeShape backend with a more scalable and performant implementation that persists data in accordance with the OCFL specification. This presentation will provide an overview of the Fedora 6.0 design, including an introduction to the OCFL and how it will be implemented. A lightning talk (seven minute) presentation given at Samvera Connect 2020 On-line described thus and The Fedora community has been making steady progress on Fedora 6.0, with a beta release anticipated in 2020 and a full release in early 2021. This new version of Fedora introduces a number of benefits and improvements that will be of interest to the Samvera community, including enhanced digital preservation capabilities via the Oxford Common File Layout and performance improvements that address specific issues identified by community members. This lightning talk will provide a brief overview of the Fedora 6.0 features and improvements that will be of most interest to the Samvera community, along with an update on development progress to date. This guidance is useful within Hyrax and other software incorporating metadata fields that could benefit from controlled terms for consistency and accuracy. We will share the decision tree for selecting and modifying controlled vocabularies and the accompanying list of controlled vocabularies that we hope to collaboratively grow. 48. Metadata Mess: Managing Errors in Vendor-Supplied Metadata

Description:
In May 2018, UNC Libraries purchased a report from 1Science which listed 47,000 articles authored by UNC researchers. Although the vendor characterized the report as an out-of-the-box tool designed to fill an institutional repository, we found that it would take significant work to make it usable for UNC’s Hyrax-based institutional repository, the Carolina Digital Repository (CDR). In this presentation, we will discuss the issues that we identified, including scripting errors, inconsistent metadata and rights concerns. We will describe the plans and processes to fix these issues and to adapt the metadata for our repository. Additionally, we will address best practices for uploads and future plans.
