This presentation will focus on Northwestern University and Indiana University’s continued work toward a sustainable model for support, maintenance, and development of the Avalon Media System - an open-source, Samvera-based repository for audio and video jointly developed since 2011. Digital Collections is a forthcoming Hyrax-based digital image repository at Indiana University (IU) collaboratively developed by the IU Bloomington Libraries, IUPUI University Library, and University Information Technology Services, with major feature development by Notch8. This demonstration will cover features for managing multi-page digital objects and Allinson Flex, a flexible machine-readable metadata modeling implementation for Hyrax developed by Notch8. Modern javascript frameworks like React and Vue facilitate building dynamic, rich user interfaces (like thematic sites or research tools). In this lightning talk, we'll show how we each built search components using these frameworks which use the Blacklight API but not the Blacklight UI. Indiana University Bloomington Libraries is involved in two new projects to digitize and store content and related metadata. Each of these projects presents unique challenges. We want to use the same technology stack for both, however, so we are choosing Fedora as a storage mechanism, with Hydra-based Sufia as a repository front end. We will discuss our decision, show advantages of this Hydra/Fedora framework, and discuss advantages of moving to Fedora 4. Indiana University and Northwestern University, in collaboration with nine partner institutions, recently completed the last year of a three-year IMLS-funded effort to build the Avalon Media System, an open source solution for managing and providing access to digital audio and video collections, based on Fedora and the Hydra repository software development framework. As the Avalon platform reaches maturity, several institutions are in the process of implementing Avalon both to replace current time-based media access solutions and to support new use cases. In addition, new funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation will support continued work to develop new features, grow and provide support for the community of adopters, and move Avalon towards organizational and financial sustainability. This panel will bring together project leaders from Indiana and Northwestern, along with Avalon community members at the University of Virginia and Stanford University, to share experiences of implementing Avalon at their institutions, integrating Avalon with other local systems, and supporting Avalon to enable a variety of use cases in research, teaching, and learning. A lightning talk at Samvera Virtual Connect 2019 described thus and What if the Hyrax web application were to support and include, by default, controlled vocabularies from marginalized communities? Currently Hyrax supplies a default set of descriptive metadata fields for describing uploaded objects. This set of fields includes Keyword (a required field) and Subject (an optional field). Neither of these fields are controlled by a vocabulary of terms upon install. The Questioning Authority (QA) gem exists as an option to configure and apply controlled vocabularies for use with fields such as these in Hyrax. While QA can be configured to work with nearly any vocabulary, the current vocabularies offered through the gem when it is installed include LCSH/NAF/GFT/MPT/DGT, FAST, Geonames, MeSH, Agrovoc, DBPedia, NALT, and Getty (AAT, TGN, ULAN). These are widely used mainstream sources for topical subject and genre description but also tend to reflect the current dominant mainstream power structure in the United States (white, male, straight, able-bodied, middle-class, Christian, Anglo). Should we increase the list of vocabularies available, by default, in the QA gem? Should we go beyond that and enable vocabulary choices on the default Subject and Keyword Hyrax fields? This lightning talk will discuss these questions and consider vocabulary options that would provide more inclusive descriptive capabilities.

A lightning talk at Samvera Virtual Connect 2019 described thus and The Timeliner is a pedagogical tool that was available in the old Variations application, the Avalon predecessor. It allows for a visual representation of the structure of an audio file or fragment. The tool, which will be made available as a standalone, has been reimplemented using IIIF Presentation API v3 for the presentation layer and the IIIF Auth protocol for the integration with Avalon. We will show the tool and also discuss the technical aspects of the IIIF standards.

For the past year, Avalon Media System has worked alongside members of the IIIF Community to co-develop the specifications for IIIF Presentation API version 3. This version moves beyond the two-dimensional image plane to include audio and video within the scope of media which can utilize IIIF to describe and manage content for use and re-use both with Avalon and by any viewer capable of presenting an object with a IIIF manifest. Avalon is excited about the possibilities for incorporating shareable structural metadata, as well as the ability to incorporate metadata along the timeline of time-based media. Join us for an update on Avalon metadata in Hyrax. The Avalon Media System is an open source system for managing and providing access to collections of digital audio and video. The project is led by the libraries of Indiana University Bloomington and Northwestern University and is funded in part by grants from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. We are working to incorporate Avalon descriptive, technical, and structural metadata into Hyrax, the open-source repository front end from the Samvera Community, creating an AudiovisualWork that can be added to Hyrax as a gem alongside other work types (like GenericWork and Image). We will share our progress so far, including mappings for bibliographic import functionality and how things look different between Avalon 6 and Avalon in Hyrax. Community and Sustainability", described thus, A presentation at Samvera Connect 2019, originally titled "Avalon Media System, and Over the last two years, the Avalon Media System team at the libraries of Indiana University and Northwestern University has worked toward developing a model of sustainability for a large open source project as part of a grant funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). As the grant comes to a close, the Avalon team will review the efforts undertaken over the course of the two-year cycle, discussing the challenges faced by the Avalon team, as well as points of success. The Avalon team will reflect upon the experience and how opportunities provided by the grant to take on new technical changes to the system, develop code in partnership, work toward better integration with the the larger Samvera community, and develop a smaller, focused community of Avalon users and stakeholders all pointed us toward how Avalon will proceed in the years going forward. The presentation will focus on our path forward focusing on Avalon on Hyrax, new features in recent releases, additional new features being developed on the current code base, and the challenges of aligning complex projects.

An overview of the Avalon solution bundle and the new Avalon components Hands-on activities adding the components to a Hyrax application and using them to ingest and play time-based media, The Avalon Media System is a Samvera-based system for managing and providing access to large collections of digital audio and video. Through version 6, Avalon was known as an independent Samvera solution bundle. In Hyrax-based Avalon 7, the previous monolithic codebase has been broken down into components available for use outside of the solution bundle. These components enhance media playback in Hyrax through robust derivative generation, streaming server support, adaptive bitrate streaming, a IIIF Presentation 3.0 consuming player, and a scriptable embedded player. A presentation given at Connect 2017 described thus and Presentation on a gem for Hyrax models and authorities, which provides a central place for creating models for different types of works. Each new model draws on a central pot of properties to declare the set of properties needed to fully describe the particular work. The gem already exists and has sample models for journal article, thesis and more. In this presentation we will work through the process of defining a new model and then using that model in a Hyrax application. The idea behind the gem is to make it easier for developers to deploy new models, and provide a place for metadata folks to jointly define re-usable models.
