A presentation given at Samvera Connect 2019 described thus and This presentation will cover the initial work to move the University of Michigan’s Deep Blue Documents repository from DSpace to Hyrax on Samvera and also merge it with the U-M data repository, Deep Blue Data, which is already on Hyrax. Deep Blue contains more than 120,000 items and has been around on DSpace since 2006. The Deep Blue Data repository started in 2016. Presenters will discuss steps taken so far to migrate and merge the repositories, including creating a minimum viable product (MVP) list, testing migration, addressing challenges so far, collaborating between IT and service providers, and determining next steps.

A presentation given at the Open Repositories conference in 2009. Part of the proposal reads and Repositories have proven themselves as powerful tools for managing digital content in many different contexts. But experience has also shown that there are real, practical limits in trying to extend a single repository solution to meet the manifold needs of most institutions for their full range of digital content and use cases. Relatively narrow and inflexible application front ends can be used to create single-purpose repository-powered solutions, but they do not lend themselves to being quickly and easily repurposed to meet variations in content type or user interactions. There is a clear business need for a flexible, reusable application framework that can support the rapid development of multiple systems tailored to distinct needs, but powered by a common underlying repository. Recognizing this common need, Stanford University, the University of Hull and the University of Virginia are collaborating on “Project Hydra”, a three-year effort to create an application and middleware framework that, in combination with an underlying Fedora repository, will create a reusable environment for running multifunction, multipurpose repository-powered solutions. This presentation will provide demonstrations of the work done to date, including of the prototype ETD application, as well as the set of content models and disseminators that the project has defined so far. The presentation will also present links to the project’s publicly accessible documentation and open source code, as well as solicit the constructive input from community members who may be interested in the project or its outcomes.

Chris Awre reports on the Hydra UK event held on 22 November 2012 at the Library of the London School of Economics. The meeting brought together a number of institutions from the UK (and some from Europe more widely) interested in the potential of Hydra.
however, library enduring commitments in print and current operations, and complex campus organizations often hinder libraries¹ ability to quickly respond to the data needs of the academy. Notre Dame¹s investment in research was recently reinforced by the university¹s approval of the expansion of ten disciplines, such as computational data, adult stem cell research, and nuclear physics. There is much needed support for research data on campus. The Hesburgh Libraries has been building an institutional digital repository since winter 2012. To respond to the trending needs, the Libraries switched gears to a user-centered and agile approach to develop data curation and access services since June 2013. Our goal remains to accept all scholarly outputs (text, images, video and audio), but with an imminent emphasis on research support. Our strategy is to grow our data curation services and our user base simultaneously, and to build success stories to drive adoptions along the way. Early adopters were identified with the help of our subject librarians, and they determined the most critical baseline features for the Libraries to develop. We also leveraged Hydra open source solutions and collaborated with Northwestern University, Indiana University, and the University of Virginia to create a new community shared Institutional Repository (IR) system. We have worked with our early adopters to pilot features since summer. We plan to launch an early access release by November 2013 and a full rollout by April 2014. We will share our development philosophy to overcome resource shortages to meet high demands on research support, our strategy to reach and develop our user base and roadmap, our insights on faculty¹s needs on research support, and our methodology to leverage and contribute to open source tools. Managing research outputs becomes a tall order of many universities, given their determined agenda to pursue research excellence. In a world of increasingly data-intensive research, data is rising as a critical component of scholarly communication, often mandated by granting agencies. Data curation, preservation, and access are paramount to university academic mission, and academic and research libraries are some of the few entities of the universities that carry such functions

A workshop given at the 2014 Open Repositories held in Helsinki. The Hydra for Managers workshop will enable repository managers and curators of digital collections to learn about the Hydra Project, encompassing both the community and the technical development. Focusing on the community primarily, topics covered will include an exploration of how Hydra fits local use cases, how to work with Hydra as a repository, and how to engage with the community to serve local needs and the sustainability Hydra going forward. The workshop will run for 90 minutes and will comprise a mixture of presentations and time to discuss questions raised by attendees. The workshop will be led by established Hydra Partners with different perspectives on using Hydra from differently-sized institutions.

Open source software isn’t really free. This might seem obvious to some, but there are many members of open source communities that consume rather than contribute, Slides from a panel session given at the Open Repositories conference in 2015 held in Indianapolis described thus, and they use the software but are either unwilling or unable to engage with the community to write code, submit use cases, create documentation, or do any of the other things that make an open source project a success. Fortunately, things don't have to be this way. Over the past two years, the Fedora project has undertaken a great effort to revitalize not only the software but the community itself. By maintaining open, transparent communication, soliciting use cases, development, and testing from community members, and establishing a clear project governance structure, we have laid the groundwork for a successful community source project. At the same time, the Islandora and Hydra communities have pursued similar strategies to build and sustain their own communities and the broader Fedora community. This panel will feature a discussion on the recent successes of the Fedora community and future plans to continue raising the level of community engagement and project ownership.

A presentation given at Samvera Connect 2020 On-line described thus and Collaboration is more than just sharing costs, and the PALCI and PALNI consortia are pushing that idea into our repository management. We want to create the flexibility for both IR workflows and more “traditional” library-owned content within the same instance of Hyku. We also want to enable libraries to collaborate and share work, not just with their consortial partners, but also among their own departments across campus. To us, this means enhancing the ability to manage user and tenant settings to enable different workflows. By working with a number of libraries testing out the Hyku multi-tenant option, we realized that a robust dashboard for user/role assignment and the expansion of a few more roles would enable us to manage these flexible workflow options. PALNI and PALCI are working with Notch 8 to enhance the underlying “role” and “group” functionality in Hyku and develop a new administrative dashboard to control permissions across multiple tenants. We will also be expanding role and group functions within tenant management. This presentation will discuss how we researched and developed our requirements as well as the plan and progress to date. Ubiquity repositories, which are based on Hyku, are designed to be highly scalable, highly reliable and quick to deploy in the cloud. In this presentation we will outline the technical architecture we have implemented, along with the challenges faced. These include scalability, security, cost-efficiency, performance, reliability, resilience, portability, delivery pipelines for code deployment, error reporting, testing and localization. The keynote address at the Hydra Connect 2016 conference advertised thus and This presentation aims to present opportunities for collaboration between current Hydra members and The Daniel Cosío Villegas library at El Colegio de México (COLMEX) as well as other Mexican institutions that are interested in making a Mexican-based Hydra users group. COLMEX has been actively planning the implementation of a Hydra-based repository. Given that COLMEX has a significant presence in various digital libraries and repositories interest groups in Mexico, we have taken the opportunity promote Hydra as an alternative, not only with the hopes of promoting the project but to find local partners that might be interested in collaborating. We hope that we might find international partners who will help to spur initiatives through various means of evangelizing, helping support efforts, and perhaps coming down to Mexico to visit. In this manner we can help Hydra become a truly global initiative and one which considers north-south collaborations especially those outside the English-speaking world.

Organizations seeking Samvera solutions may have an internal development team, yet find they require external supplemental developers due to internal resource limitations or to bridge a specific technical knowledge gap. Collaborating among divided internal/external teams can be be a productive way of reaching goals within committed timelines, but also has its challenges. We present case studies of Samvera projects that utilized external development resources, highlighting the effects on productivity and budget. We'll also share advice on ways to effectively integrate and maximize a partnership with external developers, including the benefits of their unique experience. Since 2014, partners from Indiana University Bloomington (IUB) and Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) Libraries have been collaboratively developing new Samvera-based software to manage and deliver page turning digital objects. In 2018, conversations with Enterprise Scholarly Systems (ESS), a partnership between IUB Libraries, IUPUI Libraries, and University Information Technology Services (UITS), expanded our project's scope. This presentation will highlight our development efforts, now known as the ESS Images project or ESSI. In the past year, the ESSI team has developed numerous improvements to the Hyrax digital repository software. These improvements include the ability to order, structure, and label pages within an item, replicating features available in the Pages Online service launched in 2017. Additionally, the project has implemented optical character recognition search in a community-accepted way, building upon components of the IMLS-funded Samvera Newspaper Works application. We will also discuss upcoming improvements for our existing image collections. In these collections, images often have wildly different metadata profiles from each other. Our recent work has aimed to incorporate a model for flexible metadata developed by the Samvera Machine-readable Metadata Modeling Specification (M3) Working Group within Hyrax. This presentation will explore the development of Hyku for Open Educational Resources — openly licensed educational materials such as textbooks, quizzes, classroom activities, etc. — while capitalizing on Hyku's multi-tenancy and sharing of infrastructure across two large groups of libraries. The PALCI and PALNI consortia (representing libraries in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, West Virginia and Indiana) have just received a two year IMLS National Leadership Grant to develop Hyku into a multi-tenant, consortia-based service capable of handling OER in addition to other institutional repository resource types. In addition to leveraging collective expertise through consortia, two new work types are being developed for OER and electronic thesis and dissertations. A presentation at Samvera Connect 2019 described thus and Northwestern University Libraries (NUL) became a Hydra Partner in early 2012. Over the past 7+ years, we produced bespoke applications locally using the Hydra/Samvera codebase, worked on many iterations of a stand-alone grant-funded Hydra/Samvera product with another Partner institution, contributed effort to the development of Hyrax, implemented Hyrax as a component in a larger repository ecosystem, and shifted our repository services to the cloud. As we have evolved, we have gone through many changes in our local culture, in our user needs, in our codebase, and with our talent. One of the organizational culture changes is the shift of NUL to a learning organization. This change has made us more risk tolerant than in the past. It has allowed NUL to solve its local need of large-scale fast ingestion and description using novel approaches and technologies (Elixir, AWS services, Lambdas, etc). This presentation will discuss how these organizational changes and approaches to technology projects made us privilege the value of Samvera as a community of shared values and ideas over its shared codebase.
